I've used RADAR and find it's effective for my use.

However, I always wonder if other boats with RADAR can see me ?

It will be useful when at the Roche Harbour meeting where there will be plenty of other Ranger Tugs gathering to know if their RADARs can see me clearly on their chart plotters.

Have other Ranger Tugs felt the need to add a RADAR reflector on their masts to increase their RADAR reflection ?

Barry, it is my understanding that there is a radar defector inside of our smokestacks that will serve this purpose. Maybe someone with more knowledge will speak up about this but Ive never felt the need to add anything more.

Have a great time in Roche Harbor, we wish we could be there.

We do have radar reflectors inside the stack, and our boats show up nicely. I've picked many a tug up on radar and tracked them as MARPA targets while cruising in group.

They're similar in style to this:

Our 29 does not have a radar reflector that I am aware of

I've wondered if an active radar reflector kit such as this is effective or worthwhile:

EchoMax Active XS Band Radar Reflector Kit

It seems like it would function somewhat like an aircraft transponder, and would enhance visibility in the rain, or make boat more visible to a search aircraft or vessel.

Hi Bill,

Our boats have a very effective passive radar reflector, giving us a nice target on others radar..if they are using it. I think money would be better spent on an AIS600.

Hi All,
On my old 29, I looked in the stack and there was no reflector in there. I haven't looked in my 31 yet.

I've understood that if your radar is actively operating, you have a stronger radar profile.

Myth??
