Insurance when boat is over 27 feet long ?

Subject: Insurance when boat is over 27 feet long ?

Today I made an enquiry to my boats Insurance Company. Currently my insurance is for my trade in R27/OB. The enquiry was for my new R29 CB to be delivered later next month.

I was told that boats over 27 feet long require the application for insurance to be approved/processed by the Underwriter Dept. :o

I'm assuming from this it could mean either they will not approve or will and hit me with a BIG premium. :(

I have owned multiple boats from 16 ft to 54 ft and been insured by numerous companies over the years, never had any issue when I went up or down in size. Get a premium quote from who you are with and also check with Progressive. I left Allstate for Progressive because the premium was lower and they would give me agreed value insurance. I'm sure others will chime in and share their own experiences too. Your boating experience and education and/or licensing is also a factor when buying marine insurance.

I have Boat US, which uses GEICO as the carrier. I saw very little change in premium going to my Cutwater 28 from my 25 foot Grady. Coverage was almost immediate.

Hi Barry, you must be getting excited about the new boat? We have also gone up or down in size and never experienced what you stated. We use Global Marina, which writes policies from several insurance companies....so they can shop for you without you going from one to another. Global Marine has an offic Enna for rep in the Seattle area, I d suggest calling her. Ours is also with Progressive.

We have been with Global Marine Insurance for over 20 years and 3 boats. I do shop around from time to time and they always find the best price and coverage. I have had claims over the years as well (lightning hitting a sail boat on the same docside utility center and a neighboring boat breaking free from its lines). Never a problem with claims. My 2015 Cutwater 30 S is currently insured with them.

Another vote for Global Marine. A quote from Boat US was much higher. They placed us with Chubb.

I called Global Marine and have selected them for my 2019 R29 CB. They were super fast in providing a quote and it was far better than my existing Insurance pricing and with better coverage for the lower annual premium price. :D There was no mention about the boat being longer than 27 feet. :o

When Global scanned their various Ins. carriers the upper premium range was at around $1600/yr. They selected a carrier for me at a much lower 3-figure price and with better coverage than the $1600 companies. :D Global certainly did a good job for me IMO.

Anchor Marine. Our agent is Bob Schwab. 206-273-6996. We have had good luck with him and the Travelers Yacht Policy. He is very familiar with Ranger Tugs.

Another item to check is whether or not premium includes towing. I have always bought towing separate and renewed again in January of this year. My insurance policy renewal (GEICO) came the following month and indicated they now include towing for the first time at no additional charge. Same coverage that I had with the other towing (SEATOW) . So for this year I have towing in two policies and wasted $190 due to the timing of renewal. But thought I would throw this out there for others to check into.

Mine for my 2019 R29 CB came out to be $798 and was upgraded to include Hull coverage of $292,079, $1,000,000 for P&I Liability and Underinsured & Underinsured Watercraft, Pollution/Spill Liability of $939,800, Emergency Towing & Assistance and finally Rental Reimbursement of $2,500, $10,000 for Personal Effects and Medical Payments of $25,000.

The big upfront tag was the WA Registration fee of approx $2,000.... ouch. :o ...and of cause the 10.3% WA Sales Tax which was reduced substantially because of my R27/OB trade in. :D
