12v LIGHTER socket

Postby SLyle01 on Mon Jun 03, 2019 6:48 pm

After considering modifying one of the 4 USB outlets (the only 12v sources on newer R27s)...we searched eBay and lo and behold, there are several USB-to-socket adapters (around $5) that simply plug in -with exactly the right cigarette-lighter type socket. This avoids permanently losing a USB outlet.
Humidity and salt water environment may become a future issue, but for $5, it can be re-solved easily.

Be careful, those are very limited on current. Might not even get to 1 amp. Not going to power a high powered fan, 12V hair dryer, etc. It is limited by the current provided by the USB. And you are converting 12V to 5V, then back to 12V.

I might still convert one to a 12V socket, and keep a dual plug in USB adapter.

But 2.4 amps at USB 5V converted back to 12V comes out less than one amp.

We now have one cigarette plug socket and one dual usb outlet in the cockpit of our 2009 RT 25. Thought for months about that configuration and decided one of each was best.
Easy to buy a USB adapter plug for the cigarette plug socket. We were already using two of those cigarette plug outlets in the cabin as needed.
I believe these units are modular and you can easily swap out a dual usb outlet for a cigarette plug outlet. I used Blue Sea and was told that the factory used either Blue Sea or Sea Dog components.
You may need to check the wiring gauge and fuses to the outlets to ensure a cigarette plug outlet isn’t drawing to much amperage (e.g. up to 10 Amps) compared to the wiring and fuses used to support what the USB was drawing (e.g. up to 2.5 Amps).

I’ve been looking at this too and thinking of this Blue Sea product as a good solution, $20 at Fisheries...
