Thanks Brian. I, too, have to "tug" pretty hard to remove the element.

Same here Brian. You have to yank quite a bit to pull the filter off the shaft.

I changed the oil and filter last week, trying to pull the element out I actually pulled the center shaft out of the cap. I thought I had broke it and started to panic and said a few choice words. I then got the element off and found that the shaft snaps into the cap so all was good.

You can purchase the oil filter for the 4BY2 engine on Amazon. I just purchased 2. Changed my oil this evening. Hauling Saturday.

Are these good/correct for the Yanmar 4BY2-150 engine ?
I ask as there's also the Yanmar 4BY2-180 that some R-27 have.

What engine model do you have as I see that you have the R-27 model.

Thanks... :)

Baz,
As far as I know the 4BY2 -150 and the 4BY2-180 are the same engine. The added horse power is done by computer entry. As far as the oil filter goes, that number is correct on the previous post. I have yet to find the primary fuel filter or the secondary fuel filters on Amazon.

For anyone who may be interested, I was able to get a secondary filter from this company at a very competitive price with shipping. I am only posting this because I know Ranger has had issues trying to get parts from Yanmar. So for those who are in need of parts immediately may want to try here. I think that they can only ship to certain areas, but they have them listed on the site. http://www.j-wayent.com/.

Mike, thank you for this source. You mentioned a secondary filter.....is this one of the fuel filters for the Yanmar?

Jim,
Yes, terminology sometimes gets confusing. The secondary filter is the one mounted to the engine. It is larger than the one on the port bulkhead.

How do I change the oil cartridge?

Postby captstu on Fri Jan 20, 2017 5:30 pm

How do I change the cartridge on my 4BY2 oil filter?

I got the cap off - a significant project since it was so tight - but I can't see how to get the cartridge off the filter.

Seems like another unnecessary complication.

Thanks /Stu

Yes removing it can be a struggle. What I learned by accident was put the pointed end of the stem on a couple of rags on a hard surface and push down on the element, it should pop off. The top of the element clicks in under the cap. I have actually separated the stem from the cap by pulling so hard. I thought I broke it but it just clicks in under the cap. Be sure the new filter clicks in and be sure to torque the cap per specs in the manual.

The 6by takes a BMW filter and with the same number on the Yanmar filter and the BMW filter. Please post the 4by Yanmar number and I can confirm if it is the same filter.
