Garmin Fuel Flow Sensor Stopped Working

I have a 2019 R23, over this year, the fuel flow sensor on the Garmin has slowly become less and less accurate, and now complete doesn't work. It started on some of our longer cruises I noticed the Garmin showing lower MPG than typical. I confirmed at the pump that it was indeed reading incorrectly - I could not add as much fuel as the Garmin indicated I should. At first, when MPG would drop, if I turned off/on the engine and the Garmin, it would normalize and seemed to work fine for a while, but eventually would drop back down. Now it just constantly shows 0.00 MPG when I'm at cruising speeds. Any idea what's going on or how to fix?
 
Following. Same thing happened to our Garmin 7610xs except it didn't slowly become inaccurate. Ours went immediately to 0 mpg AFTER I installed the latest upgrade (my 1st and only time upgrading).
 
Exactly the same problem with my 2020 R 23. I constantly check MPG reading to make sure I run the boat as efficiently as possible. The Garmin MPG value went bad. I spoke with Ivan and he helped with with the garmin upgrade. Still have the Problem. MPG readings fluctuated close to normal then went way off. Just got the 120 hour Yamaha service. The technician had a hard time getting the garmin to read the new 100 hour service interval. He reinstalled the upgrade. Still not fixed. Need some factory help with this issue.
 
Hi!

Several things to check:

Do you have all of the GPS satellite frequencies enabled on the chartplotter? These are under the GPS category in the settings of you chartplotter. GLONASS and WAAS should be enabled.

Is the chartplotter software up to date?

Is the water speed reading on the chartplotter set to GPS instead of water?

And finally, make sure to check the pitot tube for any clogs.

I too will check my settings. But as I stated above, after I upgraded to the latest Garmin software update, my MPG screen went to 0. However one saving grace is that the Yamaha display continues to show my MPG.
 
Can you tell me where the pitot tube is?
 
I just updated my Garmin software on my R23 and my mpg went to O as well. I changed my setting to show fuel use rate per hour, which is better than 0. But, curious why this happened and if anyone figured out the fix, such as the steps Marco is recommending. (I don’t know what a pilot tube is, either!)
 
A pitot tube or probe is what measures the fuel flow! Not sure where it is on your engine/boat.

There are two ways fo the speed to be calibrated. One is using the GPS SOG the other is using the Pitot tube which measures water velocity and coverts that to speed. The Pitot tube pick up is located in the lower unit and has a small hose that either goes to a analog speed gauge or to the Yamaha engine Gateway. The Garmin can be calibrated to use the water speed sensor instead of the GPS. I personally would have it set up to read the GPS. The Pitot tube gets plugged easily. I didn't think the tubes were used any more but based on Marco's comment they be an option.

Thanks, Brian. Speed is being calculated still on the Garmin. It just isn't showing the fuel economy as a MPG, but does show the fuel usage rate as gallons per hour and does show estimated fuel remaining. I presume that this is a software issue.

(I was reluctant to update the software but got intrigued by the idea of having the Garmin on my iPad while fishing, so made the leap to update.)
 
I just installed the newest Garmin version 20.2. Plus I tried all of Marco's suggestions. No dice, still no mpg (fuel economy) reading. It worked just fine until I upgraded the software for the 1st time last summer.

I still can get mpg off the Yamaha display which is good but it's very frustrating when something no longer works after a software upgrade. I guess I should have left well enough alone.
 
I’ve upgraded twice since getting our 2021 R-23 in November. Have not seen this issue.

It probably has to do with having a 2017 Garmin 7610xsv onboard vs your more current model.

Just curious as to if your using a Garman GFS 10 fuel rate sensor via your nmea-2000 or something else? For us at the shallow end of the pond we don't have that problem but maybe one day we well upgrade and info would be nice to have! Bob

LOL! I thought about you when my gallons per hour was showing over 10, whereas you probably have never consumed 10 gallons in a day of cruising!

As to the question, I'm afraid I'm out of my element on this. I don't understand NMEA or how it interacts with the Garmin. For me, it doesn't make sense how the Garmin would know what your fuel burn rate would be because it is engine-dependent. That is why it also doesn't make sense why my Garmin is still showing how much fuel is remaining and my consumption rate per hour, but now fails to give me the simple MPG reading (the Yamaha display shows this). I suppose it is somehow tied to whatever the NMEA thingamadig is that knows, somehow, what engine you have?
 
I believe the engine management is being read by the Garmin. The issue , it is not reading the GPS speed. The engine fuel consumption is being read but the speed and distance is not. My opinion.

But the Garmin is:
1) reading speed (shows in the display)
2) charting my location
3) showing fuel consumption per hour, and
4) calculating fuel remaining.

So, other parts of the Garmin are calculating speed and location, just not allowing it to show in MPG display. Confusing. I will search Garmin website for any fixes.
 
The last upgrade to the Garmin 8612XSV disabled the MPG (which is NMPG for me). It just reports 0.0 NMPG. It's a software glitch I assume. The Yamaha display still accurately shows MPG and is primarily what I use for trimming the engine. I just changed that field on my chart plotter from MPG to GPH. The Garmin still accurately measures fuel flow, still accurately knows how much fuel I have left. It just isn't doing the math to tell me my NMPG.
