I have searched the forums and looked everywhere online for a yellow 2 gallon tank for diesel. Our 2016 29S came with a RED can for spare fuel, but of course, it's a diesel engine. Are yellow cans available? What do other people do? Thinking about spraying the red plastic can with yellow paint...please advise.

I have never seen 2-gallon diesel (yellow) diesel can, but the 5-gallon yellow cans are everywhere. We carried on on our Loop adventure last year but never needed it. Curious as to why you are looking for such a small can, seems like 2 gallons would not get you very far....

I too like the smaller fuel tanks/cans, easier to carry and store on board, I use red cans and marked them with DIESEL ! Have never had a problem with filling at pumps, however most of the attendance have enough trouble speaking English much less what the EPA rules are!

Thanks for your response. Our 29S comes with a nifty fuel locker on the swim platform which holds two small propane tanks and a diesel tank. The locker is not large, but is handy and the base of the locker has cut outs to secure properly sized tanks. Just seems strange to have a gas can provided for a diesel engine.

Justrite makes a really high quality metal 2 gallon leak proof fuel can with pour spout in yellow, green, blue and red. Available on Uline.com, part number for yellow is H1849Y.

Hello JollyRogers,

The gasoline fuel can storage located in the propane locker is intended to carry gasoline for a small dinghy motor when equipped on the boat. This could of course be used to carry additional diesel, although as stated above two gallons wouldn't get you very far 😉

Hope this clears things up a bit.

The red gas can that comes in the propane locker on Cutwaters / Rangers is for gasoline. Gasoline for your gasoline motor on your dinghy.

It you need a very specific shape can to fit the locker, then it's sounding like you might just have to resort to paint or even yellow duct tape on a red gas can 😎

Comment by rednuke1 makes a lot of sense. Given the range of the diesel motor and the likely hood 2 more gallons of fuel will do you any good for the main engine. Conversely, You may run low of gas for the dinghy on a long trip.
Does not mean someone might like the idea of the two gallons of diesel but explains the design decision.

I would search, or contact the maker of the 2gal GAS can you now have, and see/ask if they make the same can for diesel.
Good luck!

$70 for a yellow diesel can??? A can of spray paint is maybe $3

Can you live with a colour other than yellow? These are the only portable containers I buy for water and fuel. They are much thicker than what you'll find at your local hardware store. Available in sand or drab only. The strap is yellow indicating diesel.

I wrestled with the same issue on my new C28. Yes, 2 gal isn't much but the 15 - 20 miles or so at idle might make the difference, especially with how far off both the fuel level indication and fuel flow indications are. you'd think for $200K you could get an accurate fuel flow and level indication...

Anyway, if the locker would hold a 5 gal can that's what I would have. But the 2 gal is what fits. So I wrapped a couple of layers of yellow duct tape around the 2 gal can and wrote "DIESEL" on it with permanent marker. Hopefully that's good enough to pass an inspection, hopefully I'll never have to find out.
