Good Day All,

Wondering if anyone has come across this specific trouble...

My house batteries in my 25SC went from full to discharged overnight. The boat was on the hard but not plugged in to shore power. I plugged in to shore power and everything is fine, then I flip the battery charger breaker on and the reverse polarity light comes on. There were no changes to the electrical system on the boat, and this situation seems to have come on suddenly. Is it as simple as "the charger has failed", or am I missing something here?

Thanks!
Ray

Hey Ray,

I have seen these fail without any notice. I would check to see if there is voltage coming from the charger itself, there should be connections at the charger you can check with a voltmeter. Also there should be fuse(s) for the charger, here is a link to the wiring for the R25 viewtopic.php?f=7&t=39. It is a bit crude as we didn't have much wiring diagrams back then. You could also refer to the ProNautic manual for troubleshooting. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

If I understand your post correctly, the batteries discharged while not plugged into shore power? Now when plugged into shore power you have a reverse polarity? If so, you may be looking at two different issues. Reverse polarity when plugged into a home's power often results in a reverse polarity. I have found this to be specifically when plugged into a ground fault outlet. As far as the batteries being drained, that could be a number of reasons. Was the house battery switch on and then items left on? Was the engine battery switch on and the key in the on position? How old are your batteries and their condition. There are many items running in the background when everything is turned off. How long has the boat been sitting? Do you have a solar panel?

Ray,
My C28 is on its trailer connected to shore power. For the longest time the reverse polarity light kept coming on when I turned on the circuit breaker to charge the batteries. There is also a polarity light in a cabinet under the microwave that was on. I checked the shore receptacle and the 120V receptacles on board, and all were fine. I researched the problem, but came up empty. Finally, a friend with a background in marine electrics told me I was over thinking the problem. "Just connect a ground wire from the rudder to the building ground." Sure enough, the problem went away.

Thanks for the replies, I suspect the ground issue may have been it, because the issue went away when the boat went back in the water. Next time it comes out, I’ll note if the light reappears.
