This solution is more reliable, but entails a lot more work to make the boat ready to launch or trailer. My wife and I can accomplish moving the mast to and from its hinge but it is a bit of a stretch for her. It also adds about 5 or 6 minutes of preparation to each launch or recovery.
It also takes some cut-and-fit/trial-and-error to make everything fit together properly. The PVC is all 3/4" Schedule 40, and after final fit all joints were cemented. We used 3/16" nylon line to lash the mast to the stand and lash the whole thing securely to the boat. All the lines were made fast to the stand itself with clove hitches secured with a small cable tie to remind us which end was the standing end and which the working end.
This is a totally effective solution if the workload is not a problem to you. Surely a workable solution for those who launch and recover only once a year or for an occasional trip by trailer.
