I had the pleasure of visiting with the new owner of a 2023 Ranger 27 Outboard at the recent Seattle Boat show and joined him on a technical visit to his boat; He specifically asked for assistance with a loud noise and water hammering resonating under the galley sink from the fresh water system when the freshwater pump runs. And note: we don't know if the original pump was actually installed at Ranger and we won't say the brand to be fair. As a boater of 48 years-- and rep in sporting goods, marine/rv & outdoor industries, I have some experience here. We looked at power, wire gauge, plumbing, fuse, strainers and mounting location and fresh water pump for any possible challenges; We only found the existing 3 gpm pump to be running very hard and seemingly fast. We recorded the pump operation via Iphone. Then the owner if this boat, swapped the pump out --putting a SHURFLO ( Pentair brand) 3 gallon per minute bypass - MARINE water pump-- in place of the prior installed pump. We used SHURflo Model 4138-111-E65 Aftermarket. We primed the system again and video recorded the pump running. We can't state exact % improvement but we have recordings and it seems like a 65-70% improvement in noise reduction and smooth operation- and no water hammering. We changed no other major components or location-- using only a new pump , new matching strainer and couple of matching fittings. The SHURFLO Bypass pumps are awesome for that installation; when the pump is running, it's now like a purr instead of a bark. This SHURFLO pump has a 3 year warranty, is thermally protected, and is well known by the industry. It's a great upgrade for John's Fresh water pump application. With the boat owner's permission, the recordings can be viewed.
