My impeller is due for a change - where can I find visual instructions on how to do this?

There is a video on Youtube for the D6. I believe the D4 should be the same or very similar.

I don't think I can paste the link here. The title is "How to change the impeller on a Volvo D6", provided by "Elevate Yacht".

Not too complicated but you need the pull out device.

The PDF file "Service and Maintenance D4, D6" that you can download from the Volvo Penta website shows the process on pages 70 and 71. It seems not so complicated; however, the space and position to access the seawater pump seem very tight (I have a D6).

Based on the manual, there's no need to remove belts or other components. Maybe removing the water sensor from the engine fuel filter can give you a bit more space.

The video suggested by Andreas shows the process in detail. Here is the link:

I'll keep watching the thread, as my knowledge is still 100% theoretical at this point. I will need to replace my impeller next year.

Good luck

Some Volvo engines have threaded impellers and some don't. Mine is not threaded for 2017 D4-300. I did it twice with no puller, not easy. Need the puller model, send a direct message and I will look up what I bought on Amazon

I have a 2014 R31 D4-300. Not threaded on mine. There are two types of kits and the main difference is the o ring size. I took a one day class on Volvo diesel maintenance for this engine in Portland. Couple of tips:
-Apply a models amount spline grease before you put the new impeller in. It will make the next time a little easier.
-For removal, a couple of Knipex vice-grip style tools with pointy Jaws work ok.
-After you remove the cover and so a little pulling, bump the engine for a second (don’t let it run) as it may help loosen it up.
-Put a towel under the work area to catch dropped bolts out of the bilge.
-I bought the item below at the recent Seattle Boat Show (Fisheries Supply). Trying it out next month. Not cheap, but last time was not easy.

Great response from everyone - thank you all.

Hello all . Just change my impeller on 2017 D4 330I. ordered the Volvo penta impeller kit and to my surprise the replacement gasket was circular and not pear shaped like the housing is for the sea water pump... had to use old gasket and it made trying to put housing plate back on very difficult. eventually I had to take off the strainer output hose to correctly snug up pump housing. Did anybody else have the same problem ... tried to reach parts@rangertu.com of the correct replacement gasket but no luck...

There are two different impeller part numbers for the D4-300, depending on the age of the engine. Both have gaskets that appear round when taken out of the box, but the (older) larger diameter gasket fits the "snowman" groove on the older water pump. Both impellers will fit fine in the water pump, but the older style has 8 fingers while the newer has 10. I have used both style impellers on my 2014 D4-300 without any issues, but only the larger gasket fits the older "snowman" gasket grove. When in doubt, provide your engine serial number to a Volvo dealer such as Pacific Power Group, and they can look up the part number of the correct impeller for your boat. Your engine age is likely a year older than your boat model year.
