Following in the Footsteps of Martin Nethkin/ChannelSurfing, we added "shroud Lines" to our 2022 R27OB mast.

We did not have a problem with mast cracking, but a few owners have, therefore we see this a proactive addition.

We used coated 3/16" Stainless Lifeline cable which is larger than needed, but this is a very common size with numerous fitting options.
A slimmer version would be to use 5/32 cable size, but the connector options become limited.
There is also "uncoated" versions" if that look is preferred.

The parts list is as follows:

C.Sherman Johnson 27-403 3/16" Tubular Pelican Hook (x2)
C.Sherman Johnson 27-406 3/16" Shore Adjuster (x2)
C.Sherman Johnson 29-501 Pulpit Anchor (1" Rail) (x2)
Davis LineGrabber #2460/pair

Following the instructions for removing the coating in order to get required length for the crimped tubing and performing a rough mockup at the boat, we ended up requiring 30.5" overall cable length, with 27" coated material. This was with over 50% of the threaded fittings exposed for future adjustment.

Why did we choose C.Shermon Johnson parts? #1 Currently West Marine store in Bellevue is closing and has deep discounts on all inventory. #2 these are very common in the boating industry. #3 We liked the ease of adjustment/mounting/release.

Did these get removed in later years? These are standard on my 2018 R31

curious why note use dyneema for the whole thing?

The diesel inboards have more stuff mounted up on the mast (like a spotlight), and therefore, require shrouds. They come factory installed.
The gas outboards (R23, R25, R27), the factory designed these boats to not need shrouds.
But if you add weight to the mast, a cellular antenna, a FLIR camera, etc... shrouds become necessary.
The mast also shakes and makes noise underway. If you want the noise to stop, add shrouds.

My splicing capabilities are lacking, was easier to cut/crimp, plus We prefer the coated cable look!

You could have tied a knot... or just tie a lot! ha! 😀
