Ever heard of an engine shutting down while cruising, only to start again and quit when putting it in forward? The transmission is stuck in reverse, and it will only move in reverse. In neutral, it is stuck in reverse. I switched the solenoid switches around to see if that was the problem, and it wasn't. So, it is either a control wiring issue where the transmission is not getting the right signal, or the transmission is shot. What do you think?

I experienced the exact same issue on Sunday. Was in neutral waiting to move forward to get to the dock. Moved throttle from neutral to forward and the engine died. Went back to neutral, restarted the engine, went into forward and it died again. Attempted one more time and discovered that even in neutral the transmission was stuck in reverse. I'm hoping one of the solenoids or both are done. How did you get your problem resolved? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the transmission. The problem you both have is the clutch mechanism has broken. I had the same problem and took the transmission to a ZF dealer/maintenance facility and they took
It apart and determined it was not worth the effort to repair. I did not replace it with a Volvo Penta version. I purchased the basic ZF45 A and removed the electric shifting block from the old and replaced the manual shifting block on the new. Saved much money. You should be able to find a new ZF45 A for less than $2000. Make sure the new transmission is the same gear ratio (1:1.5). Good luck!
