On our R25OB , like many RT’s, we have the led cone shaped lights. These lights turn on/off by a turn knob at the light, which works great for the stateroom but not so much for the cave. The cave light is mounted against the port side wall and is not easy to get to, based on how we store stuff in the cave. I’m thinking off installing a 12v on/off switch at the cave entrance and running the wires to the light to make it more convenient for turning the existing light on or off. Seems straight forward to me but I’m not electrically inclined. Am I missing anything? Will this work?

This is a basic install. Remove the Blue/Brown wire from the light. ( all the lights that are switched at the light are wired to one fuse. labeled Misc. LT) The Blue/brown has 12V all the time. Connect a wire to this lead using a water sealed butt connector and run it to on post on the switch. Connect another wire to the other switch post and run it back to the light. connect this wire to post that you removed the Blue/brown wire at the light. The switch, wires and light are all protected from the Misc. LT fuse already installed if wired this way.

Thanks Brian, this is exactly the input I was looking for and wanting to confirm.

This is a great idea, Jim.

Anyone know where to find a source for the switch & plate that matches the other single switches in the boat?

I sent an email to the parts department at RT to ask about the make and model of the 12v on/off switch with chrome switch plate. I’ll post the results once I get a response.

The chrome colored stainless switch plate with on/off rocker is a Sea Dog product. I ordered from Wholesale Marine. They offer a 1, 2 or 3 rocker choice. My part number is S-D-493010-1. Don’t be confused, if you go to Wholesales web page and it shows a white, gold and chrome looking option. I called them and they are all stainless chrome looking.

Thanks for doing the leg work Jim. Less than 14 bucks and the switch is it’s way to me. Now I just need to purchase some new light fixtures.

Thanks Jim for starting this thread/post. I will be doing the same on my R25/OB being delivered later this year. The info mentioned here will be useful/invaluable for me making the same modification.

On the other hand, I wonder if RT would consider locating the light closer to the isle so the modification by the boat owner becomes unnecessary. I will be asking Andrew nicely about this. 😀
