this is from teh YANMAR manual

Use a full-synthetic long-life engine oil that
meets or exceeds the following guidelines
and classifications:
Service Categories
• API Service Categories SM, SL, SJ, SH/
CF and CF
• ACEA Service Categories A3, B3 and B4
Definitions
• API Classification (American Petroleum
Institute)
• ACEA Classification (Association des
Constructeurs Européens d’Automobilies)

And no recommended petroleum lubes? That's hard to believe. If so, Yanmar has fallen a lot farther from sound engineering than I had imagined. Unless, they bottle the only synthetic that matches those specs, of course.

Which engine series manual are you quoting? Maybe all those folks having trouble with their electronic engine controls are using petro-based lubes and causing the problem. 🙁

For gear oil, I use Rotella T1 Standard Grade SAE 30. For engine oil, Rotella T Triple Protection SAE 15W-40. Both meet Yanmar specs for the 3YM30 engine used in the R21-EC. Both are carried at Walmart and are much cheaper at Walmart than other places. Many threads here and at other websites have preferred Rotella over other brands for all diesel engines.

I also use Rotella T-1. As with Rproffer, it seems to be often recommended on threads for the 3ym30.

We have used Rotella-T but usually found that it was easier to find Delo-400 in most of our regular "home ports". I am using it in the Ranger now. When we were cruising full time we generally bought by the case (or cases) directly from Chevron distributors at pretty reasonable prices.

We have been ashore for almost 9 years. It appears that both are on the shelves at Walmart now so buying is not only more convenient, but reasonably priced in smaller quantites.
