Ahoy,
I want to install a drum style anchor winch. I'm looking at the Lonestar gx2HD.
I would appreciate any feedback, suggestions or opinions on this model with the instal, wiring requirements and whatever else you can offer.
Thanks

I've been wanting to do the same thing on our 2012 21ec.

The biggest problem with this drum winch is size and mounting location due to the R-21 usable area on the bow. To not lose any space in the bunk area you would need to do a deck mount and reinforce the deck or do a bow sprit mount but that would stick out the front of the boat and would be difficult to make it look good!
If you research mounting the GX2HD you will note that most are mounted in the chain locker which would not work on a R-21. I’m not saying it’s not possible, but not going to be the easiest upgrade to your boat, and the cost is likely to be much higher than the benefits!
Best of luck. Bob

Perhaps it is possible to use the wiring that goes to the bow thruster (just don't use bow thruster and winch at the same time). Looking quickly at my R21EC there appears to be enough space for an on deck mounting without compromising walk around. I would imagine the chain locker could be reworked to accommodate below deck mounting but haven't measured. A longer bowsprit might be desirable to keep the anchor from banging on the hull when raising and lowering in rough seas.

Mr. Daily,
Thank you for you reply and comments. As usual they are spot on.
I agree that this upgrade is a lot of money for minimum improvement.
In my case though, being 84 years old with a bum shoulder and a first mate almost as old, I feel that to keep us in the anchor out camping business that we both love, it's worth the time and money.
I'll begin with upgrading the power cables in size running from my house battery bank now located in the fuel tank compartment forward. The gx3 winch will fit on my deck . The rest is careful planning and a lot of work.
Will let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again

Grouch! I am also in the planning stages for a power winch as I'm getting up in years and first mate isn't up to foredeck duty. I am thinking of the Seachoice 1000 as it is less expensive. Please keep us posted on your progress as I and others are very interested.
