Need some help. 2013 Ranger R21 Yammer . Only 35 hrs. Starts smoking blue after about 15 minutes out on the water. Back at the dock no smoke. It is using oil. No blowby when I pull dipstick or remove oil cap. Any ideas
Thank you

No good ideas that don't imply a major mechanical problem. It would have been nice if you had turned up a crankcase ventilation issue, but you have covered that. If the oil is leaving the crankcase and getting into the cylinders to burn it has three routes: induction air (you have ruled out), valve guides, or piston rings How much oil does it use? Have you changed anything recently? Why does the engine in a 2013 boat have only 35 hrs on it? If the engine sat for an extended period it may have had corrosion issues in the cylinders. They have bore scopes that can be used to look at the inside of aircraft engine cylinders. You might be able to remove the injectors and look at the cylinders through the holes. Look for scoring or corrosion.

Interesting puzzle - keep us posted.

The YM30 Yanmar only takes about three quarts of oil . Do not overfill.

The dip stick on mine had two holes. The Yanmar tech said to run it half way between the marks and that filling to the top hole would be too much.

Also, you don't say what oil you are running. I needs to be a good diesel oil ....... 10-30 or straight 30 SAE.

You don't mention if you are new owner or this problem suddenly cropped up?????

If everything external checks out, the bore scope would give an internal cylinder view.

35 engine hours on a 10 year old boat could have some hidden nasties if not properly stored/maintained.

Good luck YM30's are usually bullet proof................

May I recommend Marvel Mystery Oil ( the original oil enhancer and fuel treatment ). It's sold at most auto parts stores and workers great for restoring that engine that has sat for long periods and has internal parts that have dried up and not working properly. Bob
Just a side note, I used it on my 1929 model A, that sat idle for about 15 years, it took a little time but the engine runes like it was when new!

Could be too much oil. Have you added oil? Rule of thumb when something goes wrong, what did you do last? Also, with so little hours things tend to dry out and freeze up. You need to use that boat more!

I inherited the boat from my father in law. He hardly used it . It’s been not used for almost 2 years. I think I’ll try Mystery oil and run her. I don’t believe there is a major internal problem. She runs to strong.
Thanks for all your comments

I would not use anything but FPPF Diesel Fuel Treatment https://fppf.com/product/total-power/. And use it regularly. The fact that the boat has not been used in two years the fuel is old and the cylinders and rings may have to run a while to seat again. The fuel is also suspect. You may also have a lot of sediment in the tank. This may result in clogged filters after some use on the water. If it starts to bog down change the primary and secondary and see what happens. If it clogs again change the primary. If it happens after that you may need to have the fuel polished and the tank cleaned. There may also be a filter at the end of the pickup tube. That can get clogged also. Remove it, it is not required on a diesel engine. This small filter has been an issue with other tugs in the past.

Thanks for all your help. She just needed a good running. No smoke . Not using oil
