Ok, I need some guidance from the factory. We have a 2015 21ec with the MS15L-B reverse gear. What type of oil should be in it? 15-40 or Dexron II/III? Thanks for your response.

I contacted Volvo Penta directly when I had read conflicting information. I was told to follow what was in my owners manual which in my case was 15w-40. Same transmission as yours.

Thanks Newf. I'm working with a local marine place (a Volvo place) to solve my issue with the boat. They are confused as well. They went to their support people at Volvo Penta and they said Dexron. I guess I call Fluid Motion next week.

Hi again, Here is another link where this very topic was discussed before. I would check my manual to confirm what Volvo Penta has quoted as the proper oil. In my manual that came with the boat (2014 model) it specifies 15W-40. I have 2640hrs on it with no issues so far. "Knock on Wood."

Thanks Newf. What started all of this is a whine that has developed. Our boat has only 170 hours. I did the spring oil change and used Rotella 15-40 T5. The link you supplied referred to a manual. I take it is the boat manual, which we never got. I do have the Volvo Penta operators manual for the D1-30F and MS15L-B drive train that is in the boat. It specifies Dexron. But on the reverse gear it has a tag that specifies 15-40. If it wasn't for the whine, this would not be an issue. I just had the cutlass bearing replaced, which was quite worn, and the engine alignment is not what it should be. I'll be getting it aligned later next week after the boat has been back in the water for several days. The oil that was in the gear box when I got it did not look like motor oil, nor did it look or smell like Dexron, so I think it may have been the Volvo oil referred to. After the alignment is complete, hopefully the whine goes away with more dollars expended. If not, I'll be trying the Dexron, which seems to be the general consensus of my next step at the yard I do business with.

Hi Ohioan, Sorry for the confusion. The Owner's Manual referenced in the link I provided and the one I mentioned earlier in this thread is actually the "Operators Manual" for the engine. My "Owners Manual" for the boat does not reference anything about the engine specs.

I have two engine Operator's Manuals. One with copyright 2005 that I downloaded and shows the use of ATF (Dexron II, III). (Page 57)

The Operator's Manual for the engine that came with the documents when I bought the boat in 2014 is a later version from 2012. This one shows SAE 15W-40 for both engine and reverse gear.(Page 67 and 69)

You may want to check to see the version of your manual. With a label on your reverse gear showing to use 15W-40 maybe you have an older manual unless VP revised it again after 2012 to show Dexron.

Hope you get your engine "whine" issue sorted out soon.

Newf

Thanks, I'll post what I do to resolve this.
