Has anyone enjoyed the challenge of replacing the alternator on a D 6 Cutwater 30. I'm open to ANY tips that might help accessing, other than removing the engine. Serious access issue. Thank you H

To add to the above post, has anyone experienced having to pull there D6 motor. Just wondering about the actual time to pull and the time to reinstall. Is it cost effective to go that route. Would be a good time to inspect the motor mounts, belts, pulleys and everything else that can't be accessed also map out possible adding an access panel in the aft wall of the cave. BOATS? THANKS

Easy solution that will also allow you to change out the serpentine belt as well without killing yourself. I cut the wall between the quarter berth and the engine compartment, making an access "hatch". Remove the step into the quarter berth, remove the fuzzy cloth covering on the wall, and using an oscillating tool cut a section of the fiberglass and plywood wall. I made a hole about 15" wide. Behind the wall is a thick layer of foam insulation. Use a sharp knife to cut a couple of vertical slits in this and then lift it up. The alternator will be in front of you and easily accessed. You can replace the cut out section into the hole after you are done, the insulation will keep it in place. I covered the entire area with 1/4" pvc wainscotting screwed into the wall and into the cut out plywood which also will keep things together. My transducer is also located in this area and can also be easily accessed. Just make the access hole big enough to get your tools into the area, especially the torque wrench.

Good Luck.

I sure appreciate your input. I was considering that and you have given me the road map. Thank you so much. H

Summer Wind., Did you have to cut part of the hull liner to remove the long attach bolt?

I haven't had to replace the alternator yet, it sounds like the bolt didn't clear the engine comp liner. What did you have to do?

Haven't made a decision yet. Contemplating pulling the motor. I had 2 pinholes in the hose that supplies sea water to the head. Water shot directly onto the alternator and front of the motor with every flush.Salty mess. Concerned about pulleys and everything else that is buried under there. I'll report back. H

To put and end this thread, removing the pivot bolt is doable without removing the motor or cutting the belge liner. Long arms and tenacity. Definitely a challenge.

Summer Wind do you have photos of what you performed regarding the cutout area to access alternator and ducer?
Thank you,
‘George
