I just dropped our new to us Ranger tug at the boat yard for bottom paint today.

Since I have not had it in the water yet I need to know how much of the lower unit on the outboard is in contact with the water when fully raised up.

Do people typically paint the lower unit of the outboard?

I have seen pics where there is a swath about 8" high that is done at an angle to match the water line when the outboard is in the raised position

Feedback and/or photos are appreciated.

I don’t have any paint on my engine and don’t think it’s needed. When we stop either at anchor or in a marina I always raise the lower unit out of the water. Enjoy your boat. The R-23 is GREAT!
Happy New Year!

I use Interlux Primocon and Trilux 33, both in spray cans. I do tape off about 8" on the forward end and angle down to the rear of the lower end. I also prime and spray the mount (Which is in the water) I use the same products on the trim tabs. Don't paint zincs, or where they attach.
