We turned on our cockpit lights to find them on for maybe one second then blew the five amp fuse. Replaced the fuse, same thing happened again.

Not sure where to start looking, thought maybe the switch first? The cockpit lights themselves maybe have moisture in them and could possibly be causing the fuse to blow.

I love my lights and the safety of moving around at night that they give. Hopefully it's not a wiring problem and just a switch or the lights themselves, any help with this would be much appreciated.

I was just about to post the same question. On for a few seconds then off they go. It acts like a breaker but they are on a 20 amp fuse on my ‘16 R27 classic and the fuse is not blown. I was surprised that yours is on a 5 amp fuse. Maybe check your wiring diagram to see if that is correct.I do have a trailer light that water has infiltrated and has shorted out and turned black. Not sure if they are on the same circuit and causing this problem. Sorry I don’t have the answer yet but will post when successful.

Same issue with our cockpit lights - replaced switch - blew a new fuse. Any insights into where to start would be helpful.

Hello All,

Dose it blow the fuse when you turn the lights on or when you install a new fuse? If it blows when you turn the lights on then I would look at the switch and the lights. One of the lights could be bad and cause the fuse to blow. There are little caps on the lights them self with screws behind them to look at the backside of the light. If it blows when you plug the fuse in without the switch on then you got a bad connection from the fuse panel to the switch. There is a connection from the fuse to the switch in the cockpit that is located in the starboard hatch in front of the hot water tank. You will see a grey plug and look for a blue wire with a black strip. Pull the plug apart and see if it is corroded inside. The wire will be labeled (LED LT OB). I would also look at the connections on the rope lights under the starboard and port sun visor. You can see those wire from inside the cabin behind the wood panel above the port and starboard aft side windows. Please let me know if this helps or if you have more questions.

Thank you for your reply. I did put in a 10 amp fuse and it blew it too when I turned the switch on. The lights have worked on the 5 amp fuse very well in the past. My thought it is in the lights themselves. Going to troubleshoot them on my next visit to the boat. Thanks again.

Jared, Thank you for your help.
The fuse blows when I turn the switch on. Lights stay on for about a second then blows.
I will check the cockpit hatch wire for proper connection first. Checking the rope lights, I didn't think about that, good idea. My gut says it is one of the courtesy lights that are exposed the water. Some seem to have moisture in them.
Thank you again and I will follow up when I have more news. Dave
