Subject: 2019 R29 CB distance from top of gunwale to hull bottom ?

For my USCG Certificate of Documentation application for my 2019 R29 CB I need to state certain boat dimensions; length (L), width (B) and the distance from the top of cockpit gunwale to the base of the hull where the keel joins it (D).

I have for length (L) 28' 10" (stem to transom)
I have for width (B) 10' (port side to starboard side outer gunwale)
I have for (D) 3' 10" (as measured with a tape measure from cockpit gunwale at the current Seattle Boat Show)

Can anyone confirm the (D) measurement ?

Thanks.... 🙂

For my 2017 R29 CB I used Length 28.6 ft, Width 10 ft, Depth 4.6 ft. If I recall properly I had measured off a picture using the length for scale. I'm not saying this is right - just what I used lol. I don't think the USCG is looking for absolute precision on these things for a recreational boat. And of course it's a lot harder to confirm depth when it's in water 😉

I looked up a bunch of already-registered Ranger Tugs to figure out the depth for my R23 (it's 5ft).

You can't search by manufacturer, but with a little effort you can still track down the information by starting with the boat name.

This search is fairly robust to lookup boats by name:

https://cgmix.uscg.mil/PSIX/PSIXSearch.aspx

But it doesn't give any vessel dimensions. It does give the hull #, which starts with "FMLT" + the length, so a Ranger Tug 29 would start with "FMLT29" plus more numbers/letters.

Once you've found the right boat & mfr, you can use the Primary Vessel Number from that page and go to the Vessel Documentation search:

https://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/pls/webpls ... el_id_list

Which provides the dimensions for that boat used to calculate the gross tonnage. The only drawback is the dimensions are listed in whole feet, not fractional (e.g. 29ft long, not 28.6ft), I'm not sure if that's critical to the application or if rounding to the closes foot is good enough.

You can also search by name directly on the Vessel Documentation page, but I found it to be very difficult in how it looks up names - it will frequently return empty results. It really doesn't like names with spaces (e.g. "My Boat"), you have to instead search "My" and and then go through the (very long list) to find "My Boat".

BTW, it looks like R29's are also listed as 5ft in depth from some quick searching.

Jason's suggestion on how to look up specs on other boats works really well. On the link he gave to search by name, I skipped the name field and just put in "FMLT31" to look up all documented Ranger Tug 31s. I got a bunch (over 10 pages worth). I tried again using the same search, but filling in the vessel build year field with 2018, and it returned three boats. A quick way to narrow the field. A click on the name gave info like "Vessel Particulars" with length, breadth, and depth, along with "Vessel Tonnage," which lists simplified net and gross tonnage. Slick. :!:

Jason's & Gin's suggestions work very well... Thank you. 😀
