I've heard rumors that some, if not all, R27s might have come with AIS - receive only installed as standard. If I have it, its not functional. Where might I look for the unit ? Is there a model number so I can look up the operations, etc. I might want to energize and see if its useful here in the bay. Not interested in adding send/receive yet.

I'm sure somebody out there has discovered the answer.

Receive only AIS will be embedded in the VHF radio. So it depends which VHF radio model you have installed.

The early models, 2018/2019, and maybe some 2020's, could have come with a Garmin 300 Rx only AIS. The 2021 and newer models do not come with any form of AIS.

Lemondrop, who went with us to SE Alaska, is a 2019 and her boat came with a Garmin 300. Easy upgrade from the 300 to a Garmin 800 to get Rx/Tx AIS.

Any idea where the rx300 might be located? At the foot of the cave?

It'll be located right here:
AIS location. This is where all the AIS's fit on the R27. The Garmin 300 goes here, the 800, Vesper XB8000... Easy location to get to, easy to get power, easy to connect to N2k. I use double sided industrial strength velcro to stick them to the smooth fiberglass here.

upgrading to any transceiver model over a receiver is a great investment in safety. It's some paperwork to get a MMSI, but in tiny fiberglass boats.... it's nice to be seen.
