New RT owner here. My wife and I recently purchased a 2022 R31CB with very low hours. It came with an anchor line with a certain length of chain (appears to be 5/16" steel) followed by another length of white line. I'm interested in replacing it with 100% chain.

My question is what is the standard factory chain that is on my boat? Given the low hours of the boat I'm pretty certain that the chain/rope combo was factory installed. Recognizing that I need to ensure I get the right chain link sizing to ensure good engagement with the Lewmar Pro Series 1000 windlass just thought I'd reach out.

I appreciate your thoughtful responses.

Best,
Erik Nelson

The standard chain and rode used with the Lewmar 1000 Pro Sport is 5/16” chain and either 9/16” or 5/8” 3 strand or only the 5/8” 8 plait rode.
The stock gypsy for the 1000 is most likely the 512 model. Very a low probability it’s the older model 504 gypsy. The 504 is best used with 5/16” BBB chain while the 512 gypsy is best with ISO G4/HT chain.
For more info here’s an explanation of the difference between BBB and G4/HT chain dimensions. It does make a difference what you choose. If the chain is not marked BBB or G4/HT it’s almost certainly not suitable for use in anchoring.

Expect to see pricing of $3 to $6 per foot for galvanized ISO G4/G40/G43/HT chain and $10 to $15 per foot for stainless 316 ISO G4 chain.
Also note that going from 50 ft of 5/16” chain to 250 ft of 5/16” chain will add approximately 170 pounds to the bow.
Hope that helps.

Glider4, that is very helpful. I guess, at this point, I need to determine which gypsy I have (504 or 512). Based upon your point that it is unlikely that I have the 504 (higher likelihood that I have the 512) it sounds like I don’t need 5/16 BBB and should get the 5/16 G4/HT

Do you know how I might confirm the gypsy model number?

Erik

The gypsy model should be specified in your Lewmar owners manual. If not, you might be able to call Lewmar with the serial number of the windlass to confirm the model of gypsy. FM customer service might know.
The other approach would be to look for a G4/HT marking on your existing chain. The marking is opposite the weld side on every couple of links.
Here’s a video showing where the gypsy code is marked on the gypsy.

Going on memory about some of this. We replaced our worn out Lewmar 1000 gypsy on our former 2009 R-25 Classic about 3 years ago so I went through this process of gypsy ID back then. Yeah, if you anchor out frequently you will eventually wear out your gypsy. And the more chain you have the faster the gypsy wears out.
Then went through gypsy ID again when buying an emergency backup 25 pound Mantus M1 store-flat anchor, rode and 25 ft chain for our current 2017 C-28 last year. The C-28 is 2,300 miles away from me right now or I’d go out and look at the gypsy and chain myself.

PS: The other thing to consider with going to all chain is how to get 250 pounds or so of chain from your truck down to the boat!

Thanks Gary. Both articles were very informative and I very much appreciated the previous thread you included. Definitely makes me rethink my potential solution. If going with a chain/rope combo I’m now wondering about the ratio between the two. I expect my typical anchoring depth to be approximately 40 feet

Erik,
We’ve anchored all over the Puget Sound, San Juan’s, Gulf Islands and up in Desolation Sound. Typically we are in 10-20 ft of water at low tide and 25-35 ft at highest tide. Haven’t done 40 feet at high tide yet.
If money were no object I do 150 ft of G4 chain and 150 ft of 8 plait rode. That said, in the C-28 we have 50 ft of chain and 200 ft of 3 strand rode that the factory provided. In our former R-25 Classic we had 60 ft chain and 200 ft 8 plait rode. Both boats using a Rocna 10kg anchor

We typically let out 150 ft of chain+rode unless the anchorage is too crowded or just too shallow to allow for doing that. We also stern tie frequently. Figuring 5 feet from bow to water and letting out 150 ft gives us a scope 3.75:1 at highest 35 ft deep water and 5:1 at low tide of 25 ft deep water.

With our Rocna 10kg anchor and at least all 50 ft of chain down every time, I never loose sleep when anchoring. Well ok, there was one time at Lake Powell in an unprotected anchorage with 30 kts solid with gusts to 50 kt overnight that had me sweating and swearing but we stayed put!

Thanks Glider4. Very helpful
