Shore Power Fault — Now Inverter/120V System Not Working
I did a forum search before posting this but couldn’t find anything in the archives that seemed to address this specific situation.
Yesterday I plugged GUSTO into shore power at a marina for the first time. I went through my normal sequence of connecting the shore power and turning on the appropriate breaker. Everything initially looked normal, just as it does when I’m plugged into shore power at my home dock.
Next, I turned on the air conditioner to cool down the cabin. I heard the unit attempt to start, but shortly afterward it displayed a fault code. That was followed by the shore power fault/breaker tripping on the electrical panel.
My assumption at that point was that there was some sort of problem with the power supply at the marina.
I disconnected shore power and then discovered that I had apparently lost the inverter as well. All of the boat’s 12V systems continue to work normally, and the engine starts without any issue, but I have no 120V power from the inverter.
I tried a number of troubleshooting steps without success. Rather than continue chasing the problem at the marina, I ran GUSTO back to my home dock. Once there, I connected the boat to my normal, known-good shore power source to see if everything would return to normal. Unfortunately, it did not. I still have no 120V power.
I’m pretty comfortable tackling mechanical repairs, but electrical systems are definitely not my strong suit, so I may be overlooking something fairly basic.
Has anyone experienced a shore-power fault like this that subsequently disabled the inverter/120V side of the system? Is there a breaker, GFCI, inverter reset, transfer switch, or other protection device somewhere in the system that I should be checking?
It seems like this might be a fairly common protection/reset scenario, but I don’t know enough about the electrical system to know where to look next.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m planning to go back out to the boat this afternoon and take another run at it.
