27OB Webasto tank level

Just spent the week on our new 27OB in the Puget Sound. Beautiful weather, but COLD! We had the Webasto heater on most of the time. There really is no way to know how much diesel is in the 5 gal tank. Doing the math with the estimated fuel burn works for an educated guess, but I was wondering if anyone has found a better way.
I believe the 23 is the same....

I just saw a product advertised that addresses this issue directly. Basically a wireless device that vibrates and interprets the results to determine levels. If I remember when I get back to the magazine I will post it. It seemed perfect for this and the holding tank.

There are blind people that I've seen using a wireless type device that they hang onto the edge of their coffee cup. When the device vibrates they know when the cup is close to being full. Maybe what you're referencing is a similar type device. 🙂

Another rather simple method might be to use a flexible plastic tube.

First, measure height of the Alu diesel fuel tank. Let's say it's 15" tall.

1) Slide the tube down the filler neck until it cannot be pushed in any further or you sense resistance to further insertion.

2) Pinch the tube at your finger tips and carefully pull the tube out.

3) The tube being pinched will stop any of the fluid/diesel from flowing out as the tube is with drawn.

4) The amount of diesel in the tube will be an indication of how full/empty the tank is. If say the amount of diesel in the tube measures 5" than the tank is 5/15 full or 1/3 full.

This would take some practice and if satisfactory is a simple inexpensive solution.

The path from the filler neck to the tank takes a few corners so it's important to use a clear flexible plastic tube having at least 1/4" internal diameter.

These look interesting, would you use 2 sensors, one for high level and one for low level? Or just one for low level?
How easy is it to get to the tank on the 27OB so you could attach these sensors?
Can you get to the waste water tank to put a sensor on?

The Webasto diesel fuel tank can be accessed/viewed quite easily by looking to port underneath the oven. You should be able to see the tank's top and bottom.

The holding tank is completely hidden from view. There's simply no way to view it as it sits behind the bulkhead stringer that runs bewsyteen the bow section and the cabin.
