Well.....YOLO will not start.

Has anyone had an issue where the engine will not start due to faulty neutral safety protect switch/sensor?

Put it in and out of gear a few times.

So my buddy came over to take a look. For some reason, the little rubber boot on the button that is on the underside of the switch was deteriorating and the button was not pushing up far enough. He adjusted the position of the switch and voila!! YOLO is back on line.

If it ever fails and you need to get home, you can jump out the wires. Just be very careful that before you start that the engine is in neutral.

What was engine model ? Yanmar or Volvo ? Where exactly is this safety protect switch/sensor ? Thanks... 🙂

Hello Baz,

Don't want you left dangling for an answer. As stated in the title of the thread...

"4BY2-180....Project"

Now, WHERE are my glasses?

The neutral safety switch prevents you from starting the engine in gear. You can identify it by looking on the port side of the transmission where the gear selector cable attaches to the transmission. it has two wires. If the switch fails you can disconnect those wires and jump them out. AGAIN, BE SURE YOUR ENGINE IS OUT OF GEAR BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINE.

Yanmar 4BY2-180.

Actually, the sensor/switch is at the arm connected to the KMH 40 marine gear.

Not at boat now, but when I get back I will post a photo

Mike: Here's a few photos of what I thing you are talking about. Point me to the two wires you're talking about.

You found it. The item with the two wires coming out of it that is above the cam arm of the shifter is the neutral safety switch. If you jump the two wires out going to the switch it will replicate the switch being engaged.
