We have a small problem that I could use some help addressing. I changed the raw water pump impeller on Gratitude last week. I took great care replacing the "O" ring so i wouldn't damage it. After all the work was done I noticed a couple of drips under the waterpump so I took it apart again and didn't see any damage on the "O" ring so back together it went, i still had a leak. I took it apart again and noticed the shaft seal on the pump housing has some corrosion on it. My question is has anyone replaced the shaft seal or will i need to buy a new pump?

I just finished replacing mine also. Did you use a new o- ring? On the engine side I clean out the indentation that the ring fits in, apply some Vaseline into the groove then press the o-ring in making sure it is properly seated and even all the way around. Clean the mating face on the pump. If the seal was leaking wouldn't it show in the middle of the pulley housing? Not sure on that one.

My guess is that the O-ring wasn't sealing correctly. Try again with a new O-ring is my advice.

Also, after replacing the impeller I would douse the engine surfaces below the pump with fresh water to remove any salt water drippings when the pulley and impeller was removed. This will avoid rusting from occurring.

Thanks guys. we replaced the "O" ring again and ran the engine at the dock for 10 minutes and no leaks. After shut down I noticed a couple of drops of water coming from the bottem of the shaft. Looks like the shaft seal is leaking. We have a fourty mile run tomorrow so we will see what happens after that. I hope someone make a seal kit for this because a new pump is $500.00. I'll keep you posted.

Tim,
If it is the seal, I seem to remember a thread about someone rebuilding the pump. I seem to remember the assembly is made by Johnson and parts were available. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Tim,

You are in luck! I found this in my notes:

That BY pump is made by Johnson (#10-13374-01) and the Johnson # for the
mechanical seal is 09-20-503 (New johnson # is 0-2247.080 )

Thank you so much Mike, once again you saved my butt. As soon as we get home I'll order one. We're enjoying a couple of days at our favorite spot in Jupiter to recharge our batteries. Speaking of batteries I took your advice and replaced our five year old AGM's with new deep cycle flooded batteries. Again thank you for finding that part number.

Here's an update on the raw water pump shaft seal. Mike Rizzo got me started by having the part numbers for the seal kit. I went to Shearwater Marine in Stuart (my Yanmar dealer) and ordered the seal kit we thought would work but it was for a smaller housing. Justin at Shearwater and CiCi at Mastry Engine found the correct part number for the whole kit. The kit for the 4BY2-180 is 120650-42430 and it sells for about $71.00. While I was at it I ordered 4 ea. 6mm allen screws (120650-42390) at a cost of about $6.00 each. I recommend replacing the screws every other impeller change. I took the seals out of the housing and replaced everything the was supplied in the kit. This was about a 30 minute job and having a press really helped but I think you could do it without one. Now for the biggie, I did the work WITHOUT taking the cave apart and without any help. I must say it was a pain getting the belt back on but it's very doable. Just using a 22mm socket, a long ratchet and lying on top of the engine worked. This was a big deal for me because taking the cave apart didn't serve any real purpose for the impeller change as my arms aren't long enough the reach the pump anyway. One more lesson learned.

Oh the tribulations changing impeller and pump housing on the Yanmar engine. Don't even get me going about this horror of a job.

No matter, good job and well done.... any remaining bruises on your arms ?

Yep, just noticed my right elbow is still bleeding and I put everything back together yesterday! Also the muscles in my stomach feel like I've done 8 or 9 sit-ups too. Time for a cold one.
