For those of us still smarting from the closure of the Canadian Border and our thwarted plans to head north to Alaska, here is a murder mystery to read that takes place in lots of familiar locations. It is John Straley's The Big Both Ways. It takes place in the1930's, starting in Washington, with a glimpse of what Seattle was like during the Depression. It then works its way north from Seattle to the San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands, Dodd Narrows (with drama!), Campbell River and Seymore Narrows then up the Inside Passage to Ketchikan and eventually Juneau. The names, places, tides, anchorages and weather will be familiar to all who cruise this ground today.

It is historic fiction, but a fun read or listen to on Audible, and gives a glimpse of what the PNW was like 85 years ago. It is not great literature (four out of five stars), but so what. It is escapist fare in a year that needs an escape hatch.

May we all have a healthy 2021 with borders open again by the summer and our little boats in far flung places.

And for us on the Florida coast, Janet Howle has written a novel "Uncharted" that visits the various haunts of the Bahamas. A mystery, suspense, familiar places, Bahamian towns, and villages. Recently published a nice read for yearnings to be fulfilled on your next voyage to paradise, minus the treacherous activities encounter by our hero Carter McDowell.
