My 2014 28 AC has to have its strainer filled with water before it will pump. Shouldn't it self prime?

My 26 Cutwater doesn't pick up prime if its been on the hard for a while. I think it gets a air locked . When we launch or haven't used the air unit for a while I close seacock inspect strainer, then reopen the seacock with the strainer lid off until water comes up to the top of the strainer, install lid . This removes the airlock and primes pump. Now turn system on and water is pumping. It doesn't take long and reduces the chance of pump failure. When I took delivery of the boat last year it wouldn't pump. The dealer told me the pump must be bad. He was going to have someone come and look at it the following week. I looked at the plumbing install and figured it needed primed. It did ,this is now my procedure.

These are actually not self priming pumps and quite common that they need to be bled to remove all the air. If you remove your boat from the water, you might try closing the seacock before pulling it out so it holds the water in the system.

Thank you,

Thanks Andrew, my boat is stored on a lift. Might be a good addition to the manual.

With the pump running, loosen the hose on the output side of the pump slightly so the air can bleed out, then tighten back up when the water starts flowing.

I put a small valve on the output side of the pump and after I clean the filter I open the valve, the pump primes, and then I close the valve. It literally takes a few seconds. I got tired of trying to get air out of the pump when the temperature reached over 90 F with high humidity (of course this always seemed to happen on the hottest days). My son says I should patent it because it works so well.
