Just bought a new Ranger 2020 27. On its maiden voyage and am having trouble when connected to shore power the AC trips the main breaker. I have tried turning off all other switches on the main panel to no avail. The AC compressor kicks on and it immediately trips the main fuse or runs for a few minutes and then trips the main fuse. Reset and start again and same issue. I tried a different electric pole but same thing so don’t believe it is the marina. I can run the microwave and electric stove with no issues. Thoughts, suggestions, repairs? Thanks in advance.

Not that I will have the answer but a couple questions.
This model year has the air conditioning that can run on the inverter correct?
When connected to shore power you set the selector switch to “Shore” Power correct?
When you say it trips the breaker you mean the one on the boat, not shore power pole correct?

Have you run the air off the inverter while motoring?

Hopefully answers can narrow it down.

Thanks for the reply. Yes when connected to shore power I have the shore power on. The breaker trips on the boat, not the pole. Not even sure how to use the inverter but can’t see it running the ac. (?) The ac does run on generator so I figure maybe a faulty main switch. ?

You have a new boat. The marine air unit should operate with shore power and not trip the main ELCI breaker. The reason it doesn't trip with the generator is the ELCI is not used with the generator. The fact that the ELCI doesn't trip with any other user of power, hot water heater, stove top, or microwave would indicate that there may be an issue with the wiring going to the Air unit. The ELCI will trip because there is to much load over 30 amps, which should not be the case if the Air unit is correctly wired, connections are tight and clean. Or it will trip if there is an amp differential between the neutral and the Hot meaning there is some current going to ground. Not a good thing that is why the requirement now is to have a ELCI breaker. My advise is call your dealer. Ask your dealer or the factory why the ELCI is tripping? Did the Air unit work fine when the dealer delivered the boat to you ? Does the PDI indicate that the factory and dealer checked the proper function of this system? If it did and it was at a different marina maybe the issue is at the marina that the boat is moored at. There was post last week about electrical issues and wiring, another one a week before same issue ELCI tripping but with the stove top. It is probably a simple issue but it should be looked into.

I had this issue when my boat was new. The ELCI kept tripping when I had a higher load on it but not a high enough load that should trip a 30 amp breaker. After a couple of weeks of the dealer telling me I had to use power management I looked into it and found the electrical connections at the shore power receptacle mounted in the cockpit were loose and severely burned. They were not tightened properly. After repairing the connections and tightening them I had no issue. This year I found the same issue in my main electrical breaker panel, connections that were loose had finally burned and melted.

A 2020 Ranger just delivered should not have 120 Volt electrical issues. Make sure it is not the Marina then call your dealer. Be safe.

Hi Brian - thanks for the info...I am not a mechanic or electrician by any means so not sure about checking the wiring...I did call the dealer and they said to reach out to Ranger Tugs as I am away on the boat. Haven’t heard back from Ranger and finding it difficult to find someone to look at the boat. I also suspected that there was something wrong with the wiring somewhere as the AC does run with the Gen. I did use the shore power for 3 days at the previous Marina but where I am now I cannot get it to run without tripping the breaker. I have tried 3 different poles here now - hard to believe it is the Marina at this point but who knows. Pretty frustrated as I am pretty far from the home dealer now and have 6 more days on this trip. Really will be a bummer to have no AC, especially on a new boat! I just sold my other boat and downsized to the 27 as cruising life has changed. I appreciate your help and if I can find a mechanic I will have them look at your post for ideas.
