Adding flip-up hinges to captain's seat on R23?

Has anyone tried adding hinges to the captain's seat on the R23?

I'm thinking of what the R25, etc, have where the captain's seat back folds down, then the whole seat flips up and you get to use all that additional counter space 🙂

The R23 counter does recess where the captain's seat sits, I was planning to build a little drop-in cutting board to bring it back up to level.

Before I go to Home Depot and start buying hinges, I was hoping someone has figured this out already.

Also, any tips & tricks - do I need to add any reinforcement underneath when I do this?

I see I'm not the only one thinking about doing this. But I haven't devised a plan of attack yet.

West Marine...(and others) sell something called a passive seat mount....it has a hinge and red bumpers and springs at the back...so the seat when you are thrown back does not bottom out....it takes the jolt out of a bounce...I have used one on my C-Dory for probably 10 years and it is super...take a look at one before you decide...has the flip forward plus a locking pin to keep it from doing that when you don't want it to flip forward...very important...plus keeps the jolt out of your back...I like it...

This is def. the next mod on the list. Was hoping to finish before desolation sound but ran short on time. Hinges and hardware bought. I've pulled the fridge and although it's a tight fit it removes easy. I like the Idea about a drop-in cutting board. Also going to check out that west marine hinge. Pics when I'm done. 🙂

I just had several conversations with Chelso Arrigoni <chelso@arrigonidesign.com> about adding a folding feature to their new ARRIGONI FL-3 bolster seat. They can attach a 3/4" piece of King Starboard with a stainless steel continuous piano hinge to the front of the seat for a full price of $469 USD, plus shipping. IMHO this is a very beautiful seat and will look terrific in the R23. If you email Chelso he'll send you a photo of their FL-3. The inside of this seat (between the arms) is 19-1/2". The full width is 24".
