Fellow Tugnuts,

I recently purchased a Vesper 8000 AIS. I’m looking for advise in adding an additional GPS antenna... Suggestions as to where to mount the antenna, and as important, where/ how to run the wire from the antenna to the AIS behind the MFD.

I have a 2012 R29 Classic

Thank you!

Tom

doesnt the AIS 8000 have an internal GPS unit as well? I thought I read that the vesper units who have internal GPS are acvtually working well when installed inside?

I installed my Garmin AIS600 in the electronics closet accessed from the v-berth. I didn’t want to run an external antenna so I mounted the antenna in the closet. I get excellent reception. I ordered a flush mount kit for the garmin antenna.

The Garmin AIS 800 has an internal GPS and is now being installed by RT when owner's opt for the upgrade from AIS 300. On my new 2019 R29 CB the AIS 800 is mounted on starboard side behind and between the cabin liner and hull and can be accessed via a pop out panel in the foot (fwd area) of the cave.

On TOUCAN, our 2017 R27 Classic, we put the GPS antenna for the Vesper AIS in the cubbyhole above the helm and ran the cable down along side the front window.

Update:

I just got off the phone with tech support on the Vesper XB 8000. The vesper 8000 does not come with an internal GPS antenna. It’s the 6000 that does. However, tech-support did mention that it is completely fine to mount the GPS antenna inside the vessel.

The good news is I can put my ceiling back together!

Thank you all for your input.

Tom

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I have the GPS antenna for my Digital Yacht Nucleus mounted in the helm electronics bay of my CW 28. Works just fine. I'm sure the vesper will too. -martin
