I have a two part question regarding the air conditioner reverse-cycle system. This unit is located underneath the helm seat on my 2021 R27.

1. What are the maintenance requirements e.g., tasks and frequency for the air conditioner reverse cycle unit. If the only task is to inspect filter and replace/clean then how do you access the filter?

2. My R27 has lithium batteries therefore, is it feasible to use the air conditioner reverse cycle system while underway?

Thanks for you input. Louis

You should have an air intake screen in that helm area. If so that screen needs to taken off if on pressure points or unscrew the framing to access the filter that needs to be cleaned. I was told that the lithium batteries charge by the outboard engine alternator while the boat is on the way. I was also told the ac could be run away from shore power. The only thing I’d be cautious of is making sure the water pickup works properly at the speed you are traveling.

Jim, I appreciate your response to the maintenance and op

Assuming your heat pump uses sea water in the heat exchanger, you will want to descale the whole water path (seacock water inlet to past the heat exchanger to the exit fitting) every few years depending on your usage. Once the boat is on the hard in the Fall, I open the seacock to drain the system, then pour Barnacle Buster in a the exit fitting while a friend closes the seacock when the BB starts to exit the seacock. Then let it pickle for an hour or two and drain. If you are in a cold climate in winter like me, repeat the process with anti-freeze and you are good till Spring. HTH Gary

We ordered our 2021 R-23 with A/ while underway. It came equipped with and extra house battery, 2000W pure sine wave inverter, and a soft start we as to A/C.

I have since replaced the lead acid batteries with 400Ah of LiFePO4. This gives us about 5 hours of air conditioning while cruising (compared to 2 hours max with the lead acid batteries).

Our 2011 R-27 system gets dust (house fuzz, ect) into the air intake screens which are under the V-Berth, clean it often. Also the cooling water intake has a strainer prior to the pump, and it needs cleaning about once a month, we are in Fresh Water.

I have run the heat pump in the AC mode while underway and at 25 knots for 45 minutes or longer with no issues. It cooled the cabin down nicely and pulled the lithium batteries down very little.
