Can you run OEM Air Conditioner off of OEM Generator?

What is OEM?

We run our air off of a Honda Generator. It will run for four hours on a tank of fuel which means you need to get up twice to refill. Give you a chance to check the anchors.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer

I was inquiring about using the optional Air Conditioner that comes with the boat with Ranger's optional generator (i believe 2kw).

Tim,
I guess you could say we have the "optional" air conditioner-heater on Solitude. As I said in my last post, we run it off of a Honda Generator. We can run the battery charger as well as the air without over loading the generator. Again, we can get about four hours run time on the generator with the air on. I always manage to wake just before it runs out of fuel. You do not want one of these things to run dry..... they are a bugger to get started if they do. Not something you want to do at 1:00am when it is 100 degrees outside......

With the built in generator, you should have no problem. The choice we had when we purchased Solitude two years ago was the "free" Honda or $7,500 for the built in generator..... well, you can imagine, it took about..... that long to decide!

The honda works great. We use solar panels during the day to keep the battery's topped off running the generator only at night to keep the boat cool for sleeping.

Where did you get your solar panels? I would be really interested in seeing pictures of how you set them up.

Yes, and you can even fire up a stove burner at the same time, but the generator sounds like it's carrying its max load at that point.

Doug,
We purchased these at West Marine along with the mounting brackets. These panels would charge your battery's if you had your vessel on a mooring and left no electrical equipment running. We simply use them to keep the battery's up to as close to a full charge as possible when anchored. We like to run the stereo and frig.

DAVE, WE ALSO HAVE A HONDA 2000 EU [ ACTUALLY 2 OF THEM, THEY CAN RUN THE AC IN OUR TRAILER] BUT CERTAINLY DON'T WANT TO HAUL BOTH OF THEM ON THE 'BEE' .WHAT KIND OF AC DO YOUR HAVE AND WHERE DID YOU GET IT/ I'M THINKING OF BUYING THE SMALLEST AC I CAn FIND FROM HOME DEPOT OR WHOEVER, AND MAKING THAT WORK. I'M NOT TO BAD AT FABRICATING. THANKS, LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU JULY16-18 , STEVE AND TINA---NO CLUE

Steve, you didn't say what type of air conditioning unit you're thinking about.

I've noticed most of the Rossbrough 246s have mounted their AC units on the roof of their saloon. Circulation/ducting of air might be an issue, but roof mounting looks easier than installing a unit using raw water, requiring pumps, thru hulls, etc, and it may be cheaper.

When we bought our Albin 27 Aft Cabin several years ago, we installed two units. Had to use two units because of bulkheads, cabins being separed by the engine compartment, etc. Can get to be a major, very expensive project.

Good luck,

Gene

Steve,
We have the factory installed air unit. I am in Hawaii this week so I cannot give you the exact model until I get home. In the meantime, Andrew may be able to tell you what the make and model is.

Andrew, Solitude is hull #24.
