My 2008 R25 with a 4JH4-HTE Yanmar does not have an air cleaner element. In a previous boat with Lehman engines, I also did not have air cleaner elements so I thought that was normal practice in boat diesel engines. I see other Tugnuts talking about elements and I'm wondering what is the real story. All my service manual says is to disassemble the intake silencer (air filter) and clean with a neutral detergent and reassemble - but nothing about what is inside the silencer (which in my case is nothing!). My engine owner's manual says "clean the intake silencer(air cleaner) element every 250hrs". The word 'element' certainly implies a specific item.

Does anyone that has a 4JH4-HTE have something inside their silencer?

Thanks,

Doug

I have same engine, same as you no filter. I checked the parts catalog and the screened intake is referred to as a silencer and no insert or filter is shown. Intake silencer part # is 129470-12301.

Thanks for the reply. I can be at ease knowing it's OK not to have an element. Either that or I should worry why mine doesn't need one and others do!

Regardless, thanks again.

Just a thought - the main reason for an air filter on any engine is to remove dust and other particulate from the air entering the combustion chambers. Unless one is operating their boat on water under very unusual circumstances, i.e., a dust storm of epic proportions, an air filter is not necessary.

Well. I don't know about anyone else, but the air filter in our a/c unit can get pretty clogged with regular use. And my air filter on the turbo can get pretty dirty after 6 months. My assumption was the same as joempo, until I saw all that dust. Can't figure where it comes from, but it seems to accumulate.
