Guess it’s been a while whole new look!
I have a 2011 R29 with the Yanmar
Anyone find a replacement air filter that is not too expensive? I have been cleaning mine but I think time to replace .. Factory price is typical Yanmar pricing so wanted to see if any alternatives

I have a 2011 R-27 with Yanmar 4BY2-180 engine. I was advised by multiple mechanics to only use Yanmar air filter, as cheaper replacements could damage turbo. Take that for what it’s worth, I am certainly not a mechanic. Replacement Yanmar air filter was $180 in April 2024 at Tri-County Diesel in Bellingham, very good service, they had to order it, and called when it came into shop.

I have a 2012 R27 with the Yanmar 4BY2-180 engine. I recently checked the price for a new air filter, and it was priced outrageously high. So, I decided to create a generic replacement air filter. Using the following components, I created an off the shelf alternative and replacement filters will now cost under $20. I started by obtaining a 2.5" 63mm Blow off Valve Adapter Aluminum T-pipe Shape Tube For 25mm OD BOV on eBay for ~$19 and cutting each of the 63mm ends to ~1.75". A RED 2.5" 63.5mm Inlet Cold Air Intake Cone Replacement Quality Dry Air Filter costing ~$16 goes on one end. Make sure it fits snuggly against the 1" connection for the Blow Off Valve. In fact, I used a file to reshape the weld bead so it would fit closer. On the turbo side of the "T" shaped tube I attached a piece of 63mm 2.5" 2 1/2" Straight Intercooler Coupler Silicone Hose Turbo Intake Pipe, costing ~$6, cut to a length that left no gap between the aluminum T Tubing and the Turbo Intake. Again, this is snugged up tightly against the outside of the 1" tubing. The 1" rubber hose that formerly attached to the side of the air filter is attached to the 1" OD aluminum tubing on the side of the "T" fitting. All connections are secured with Stainless Steel Hose Clamps. All parts can be sourced on eBay or Amazon. The completed assembly appears as shown in the attached photos. I trial ran it on the boat and it all worked well. The diesel ran smoothly across the entire RPM range. I cut the aluminum tubing to the desired length with a hack saw. For cutting the silicon connecting tube to length, I inserted the cutoff piece of aluminum tubing inside to hold shape and provide support, then cut it to length with a utility knife. By keeping all dimensions that affected overall length of the assembly to a minimum, I achieved 3/8" clearance between the secondary oil filter housing and the end of the air filter.
