I recently replaced the Garmin AIS-300 on my 2015 Cutwater 28 with a new Garmin AIS-800. It was pretty much a "plug and play" upgrade with no issues. I had it programmed with our MMSI by the seller/dealer before they shipped it to us.

However, when looking at the display on my screen , the AIS target for my boat appears to trail behind our boat by a bit, even when at slow speed. And if I click on the target, it would appear that the Garmin system doesn't seem to recognize it as being us, but reports that it is dangerously close (I think).

Any ideas for me? Thanks!

(I haven't figured out how to attach photos here, or I would post a couple of pictures of what I see on the screen.)

AIS reporting is inherently laggy. If you load up both it and radar, AIS will always trail behind.

Take a look at the reporting intervals.

Edit: maybe I’m lucky that my Garmin display filters my own broadcast out, so the only time I see the lag is if I have radar on which isn’t often.

You need to tell the Garmin Chartplotter what your mmsi niumber is. You shouldn’t see yourself on AIS.

Next time I'm at the boat I'll find the setting and let you know where you program it in. I think it's under Settings, general, Nema2k settings (you'll see the Garmin800 listed there), and it'll let you set the MMSI number. But I know this step has to be done else the Chartplotter sees yourself as an AIS target when it shouldn't see yourself.

On my 2018 R29, the Garmin VHF also had a "Recieve" feature, Once I upgraded, the VHF was receiving my own AIS800 transmit. I went into the VHF menu and turned off the AIS feature on the VHF and i no longer showed my own boat on AIS.

I hope that helps.
