Has anyone installed an alarm system on their tug? Im looking for a an audible system that is simple, relatively inexpensive, but effective. Im wondering if there is a 12v system out there similar to an auto system, but that wont be affected by the motion of the boat. With the number of hatches, using a contact system seems difficult, and using a motion type system will be a problem too. A simple break the beam system would work but it seems all the systems have gone to motion.

Think about what you are trying to accomplish.
Motion detectors are for open spaces. Our tugs are not open spaces, especially inside. And motion detectors will false alarm on swinging curtains, etc.
I would use two break-the-beams. One down the center of the cabin and one across the cockpit. No one will be able to open the cockpit hatches or enter the cabin without breaking those beams.

I don't know, good insurance policy, lock the boat, safe marina or mooring and hope for best sounds like a better alternative. Hey, we were within 100 yards of our boat In a secured marina and someone came on the boat and stole my wife's iPhone. We wouldn't have had a security system on anyway. And this marina was one of the best marinas we have ever stayed at. Go figure.

The Boat Nanny is very expensive.

Over the years I have discussed security with many owners around the marina. The majority of the owners would rather have minimal security including a cheap lock on the door and let the insurance pay for anything stolen, rather than having massive repairs because the owner had an expensive lock and big security. Just something to think about.
