So I recently found my main circuit tripped and my engine battery drained when I went on my boat which was plugged into shore power. I’m thinking that there was a power surge that tripped the circuit and the heater on the boat started drawing from the engine battery. I recharged the battery but now I’m wondering if there is some kind of alarm that I could plug into an outlet that if the power goes off would alert me via text or email?

Thanks.

Todd

I plan on buying one to experiment.
Also has the ability to turn on a 120v component with a text message.
Thanks!!

Also look into these guys:

The pricing plan was a bit more, so I was leaning towards the iSocket.
Although the Marcell does have water sensors you can use to monitor water in your bilge.
Oh and these guys are sold on Amazon. and seem to be a US company.

We have Siren Marine on our boat. The installation was trivial. Siren monitors 12V, which you can use as a surrogate for losing shore power because when you lose shore power the battery charger kicks out and the voltage drops below 13v. Monitoring has saved us twice when someone or something tripped the pedestal breaker. Siren also has a direct AC measurement. We have two temperature monitors (one is wireless, and I recommend the wireless sensors), and I am about to install a wireless high water detector. Siren is one option of many, and only one opinion. Good luck

what a genius solution! - no monthly fee's will do temperature as well. just plug it into the 120V power socket drop a $15 sim card in it and you are done!

Todd, unless your parallel switch was on and your inverter was on your start battery should not have been drained. Your house bank would have been drained for sure in this scenario. If this did happen and your parallel switch was off then you have a wiring issue. A heater would drain the house bank in a few hours or maybe less depending on the draw.

Love the socket device! And +1 to the parallel switch discussion.

One way I've tried to limit risk with high amp AC devices -- like bilge and other heaters I use in winter to keep her at 45F -- is to put the inverter into 'shore power only' mode. By default it is set to switch and use the battery for AC when shore power disconnects. That is handy but only if the power returns within an hour or two!

To change it, check the manual (would link, except I'm away from then boat and forgot the model, but they may vary anyway). It was easy to do but not at all obvious. Had to navigate through the menu on the tiny screen. If I recall correctly it shows 'In1' for the mode when it is shore power only (and In0 when it switches automatically).

For anyone interested, the iSocket devices are currently on sale (through July 28 it seems) at $42 off ($177 instead of $219) Be sure to get the separate sim card for $15.

I can't vouch for them yet but I did just order one. Although it's a bit odd to prepare for winter on the warmest day of the year here in the PNW!
