Yes, we are on the list for more info...been talking to Sam. I followed Sam's blog for both adventures.

Sam here. Mark Bunzel, the owner of the Waggoner (and several other boating publications), will be leading this trip. He's done the trip many more times than I have, including aboard the NW Explorations "Mother Goose" guided flotilla.

I'm doing some of the legwork for the trip and may be along for some or all of it.

If you have any interest I encourage you to sign up on the Waggoner site for more info. You'll have no obligation to join the trip, but it will give us a better idea of the boats we can expect AND if you decide to go you'll be towards the top of the list.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Sam for the update, I had followed your blog for several years and was going to follow in your footsteps with my C-Dory but the wife wanted more comfort before we did Alaska, so we moved up to the Tug, we'll be looking at this adventure also.

Here is an interesting link for some planning during the winter for next spring.

http://www.nwcruising.net/index.html gives cruising distances, and much more.

Thanks Herb for the URL ref. 🙂 Have signed up for more info as well.

The site has very good info for the PNW area for sure....nice. I did find the web site to be a bit overloaded/cowded with UX though.

My wife and I would like to do this cruise. I see there are only seven slots. How do we retain one? Any insight would be great.

HI Kent,

Send an email to Sam Landsman (sam at waggonerguide.com) There seems to be quite a bit of interest, so much that another group of mostly Ranger Tugs may be leaving on June 1st. Looks like we will have a great time.

Just an update...we are running a trip leaving Anacortes on June 1st and arriving in Ketchikan on June 22nd. Three of the six boats we have confirmed now are Rangers/Cutwaters. We have space for a few more boats, and we'd love to have another couple Rangers or Cutwaters!

If you're interested, email me at sam@waggonerguide.com.

Any other Ranger Tug owner(s) thinking or confirming doing this cruise ? Just wondering as I'm contemplating doing this but am waiting on my wife's sister and husband from UK to agree joining me. My brother-in-law has been pestering me about doing a cruise to Alaska and this posting by Sam Landsman (Managing Editor - Waggoner Cruising Guide) seems like a good opportunity not to be missed.

For me, I need to be back home in Edmonds, WA by mid July and this then would allow 6 weeks to make the trip up and back. It's a total of some 1400 nm (Anacortes->Ketchikan->Anacortes).

The outbound trip will be with several boats but I'm unsure about who would team with me for my return trip.

If wife's sister and husband cannot make it over here for the 6 weeks I'm wondering if someone else would like to join me as 1st Mate ?

I'm working on the cost for the trip and have just a few rough figures using pessimistic numbers (i.e., on the high side)

1. Fuel cost around $1,200 to $1,500
2. Marina docking fees around $300 to $400
3. Food for 2 or 3 people around $1,000 (this is a real swag at best, but suspect it will not be less)

So with just the above, the cost is around $3,000.

I'm sure there are other costs and ask others to add to this list with cost estimates... Capt. Mac ????

Thanks... 🙂

Hi Barry,

Your figures are probably accurate, but I never count the cost of meals as part of the trip cost. I eat about the same whether I am traveling or I am at home...actually we are at home in our boat so the meals are not an extra factor. The actual extra cost of the trip will be the moorage, fuel, and maybe some extras for sight seeing.

The problem I see with your plans are that if it takes you 22 days up to Ketchikan, and you have to be back by mid July, 22 days back would put you back in Anacortes on the 14th of July. The trip up is a pretty tight schedule for the 22 days. If you try to to do the same on the return, it will be really ambitious. I think you should allow at least a month for the return so as to not be so stressful. I would not like to keep the same schedule for 44 days as the first 22. In the words of us old RVers, it is not more than 200 miles per day (4-5 boat hours) then the 2-2-2 travel plan:
200 miles (4 hours) or so on a day's travel,
arrive around 2PM,
stay at each destination around 2 days....

then off again

I would like to visit Sitka and spend about a week there, so many places that beg for more than a passing glance as we go by.

Our first trip to Alaska in our motorhome, we were gone for 89 days. So far to travel, that you must take the time to actually see the area. We spent a week in Homer, ate lunch everyday at the Homer Senior Citizens Center and met some very interesting local folks. We spent another week in Valdez, led the 4th of July parade on our trikes with Jake.

Do this trip, but take enough time to enjoy it.

Herb: Thanks for your insights/advice... they make much sense. 🙂 I'm beginning to think the timing for this cruise to Alaska is not going to work for me as I really have to be back home by mid July. Leaving Gill behind for much longer than that is one of my concerns here... plus her other sister from UK is due at our door step July 19th... so I'm back to the drawing book now... 😉

Barry
You are so close to making the trip.. Any chance you could arrange to get trailered back part of the way? This would allow you the time.. I only wish I could do this trip you should try to make it work .. I only hope one day I can do this trip ..
Good luck

Hello

I am willing to volunteer, help and pay the portion of the expenses anywhere. Round trip or one ways. Unfortunately, I cannot volunteer to help on this trip to Alaska as I will be in a wedding during that time in lower 48.

Sincerely,
Carol

Hi Barry,

You can certainly make the trip from Ketchikan back to Edmonds in 3.5 weeks. You'll be moving every day, sometimes long distances, but it's doable. Not ideal, but manageable.

Another option would be to have someone else run your boat back from Alaska. You'd have to be comfortable with letting someone take care of your baby, though. In this scenario, you could either continue cruising through Alaska for the 3.5 weeks after the group trip, or work your way south and switch crews in Shearwater or Port McNeill.

You could also check into shipping your boat back home. Alaska Marine Lines runs regular barge service from Seattle to many communities in SE Alaska. Prices aren't too bad, although it might be a challenge since you wouldn't have a trailer for your tug in Alaska.

Finally, if you have some free time in August, consider leaving the boat in Alaska or BC, flying home for several weeks, then returning to the boat and cruising south. This is a popular option for cruisers, especially those who are still working.

Good luck, and let us know if we can answer any questions.

Best,
Sam

Thanks Sam & others.... 🙂 As I posted.... need to return to the drawing board to consider all the options and advice.
