Just took delivery of a new R 25 SC. I'd like to purchase a larger anchor and use the standard one as a spare. Would appreciate suggestions as to brand and size of one that will fit properly.

Anchors are like opinions, so you should get a number of them. We have a Rocna 22lb, attached to a shackle, 50' of chain and 200' of rode. We had the same style anchor on our last boat and in over 4 years of experience in all sorts of Seabeds, tides, currents and weather and the anchor has never lost its footing. Check with Andrew @ RT but I would guess if it fits on a 27 it would work on the 25.

If you type in the word anchor in the search topic, you will find a ton of info previously posted about anchors.

I too bought a Rocna 22# for our 25SC, sets great in many different bottom conditions and has held in many blows with less than ideal scope and large tidal range, if I could only get it to set into granit than I would be completely satisfied. I did buy Rocna based on a lot of research and reputation however I was very disappointed to discover that Rocna moved their manufacturing to China after I bought mine, I assume to make more $$$. Rocna of course still stands behind their warranty and quality assurance but who knows...China manufacturing doesn't have the best reputation. In my opinion they had a good thing going with the New Zealand reputation.

I used the Manson Anchor Supreme 34 lb 30 feet of chain and 200 feet of rode on my R-27. 34 lbs is a bit overkill, but you can never have too much anchor. The Manson is very similar to the Rocna and a bit less expensive. I originally bought a Rocna, but there was a recall because of poor manufacturing in China, but I believe that issue has been resolved. The Manson has a wider shaft so I had to install a larger bale at the end of the anchor launch. With either anchor you have to extend the launch out to the next hole because the shafts are longer.

Spend as much as you can afford and get the biggest anchor you can handle. No one ever lost their boat because the anchor was too big or held too well. A lunch hook could be quite small, but when really needed, go big.

The Rocna 22lb does fit a Ranger 25sc since the same roller is used on the 27. The roller used on your 25SC can be extended to support the Rocna if its not already. Thank you!
