After the brand new bulb in the anchor light went out in a mere half an hour, I got on line and looked up the Festoon bulb used in the Aqua Signal Model 25 all around lamp. in an LED version of the bulb...

And he gives a discount to Ranger owners - making it half the price of the Dr LED bulb...

I have been using this very bulb and it is wonderful. It is very bright and draws very little amp hours. I also highly recommend them.

The web site seems to indicate that the same bulb, in red and green, is appropriate for the side lights.
Is this true?

Yes it is true, but you do not need LED's for your red and green for they are on when the boat is running and are getting power from the engine. I would not spend the money.

Yes, they cost more than incandescent bulbs but will last a hundred times as long...
The real upside is that you are far less likely to have to go out there in the dark and replace it... The reason I spent the money was last weekend we were going up the river right at dusk to watch the fireworks, and the light went out (brand new bulb) and there went our fireworks display... We did not have a spare and even had we a spare, changing it in the dark on a rolling river with lots of drinking on the boats streaming past us, was not smart...

Do coat the contacts with silicone grease when installing as you will not be opening the light fixture for decades and corrosion is your next worst enemy after you have solved the issue of broken filaments...

Levitation.
I agree, it is worth the extra money not to have the darned things burn out.

So what i am hearing from you guys is that everyone is having a problem with the lights burning out prematurely?

Stuart

I am on my 4th boat and that has always been a problem. It gets expensive after a while, not counting it being a pain in the posterior. When I got my tug, I had LED's installed in all the nav lights, and so far have not had to replace any.

It's not just burning out that's a problem. Incandescent bulbs can also fail due to shock. Rough seas or trailering over rough roads can often do a bulb in. The LEDs are worth the extra price as they're far less sensitive to shock. Nothing worth than launching before dark only to discover your nav lights/ancho light are out and you don't have a spare bulb.
