We are scheduled to take possession of our new R-27 ob at the end of September. One of the first things we would like to do is upgrade the stock anchor to something larger and more robust. Thinking of either a Rocna 10 or Manson Supreme of roughly the same size. Has anyone replaced the existing anchor on their R-27 ob? If so, what did you select?

I have had both and both work well. The only reason I returned the Rocna was that they had a recall and when I went to switch it out they had a Manson Supreme in stock. It was less expensive than the Rocna and they let me switch and gave me a refund on the difference. Their profiles were a little different from one another, but in all the same performance. I went with the 15 and had to move the launch forward to the next hole and replace the bale for a higher one. Not sure if you will have to do that for the 10.

I replaced the factory-installed anchor with a Rocna 10 on my 2105 RT-25SC and the anchor worked perfectly with the existing setup, i.e, I did not have to change the bale. The Rocna 10 should fit well on your larger RT-27. By the way, I have been very happy with the holding capability of my Rocna.

We upgraded to the Rocna 15 on our 2113 R25sc and didn't have to change anything. It fits perfectly and we have been very happy with it. Some may consider it overkill, but I consider it money well spent. We sleep well at night!

I also have the Rocna 15 on our R25SC and very happy with it. I did change the bail for a taller one. Presently at anchor in Block Island, RI. As Ron stated we sleep better at night.

Here’s a vote for the Ultra anchor and its much lower priced, but basically same cousin, the Spade anchor.

I put an Ultra on my (former) R-31. It set and retrieved easily, and never dragged. I put a Spade anchor on my current boat, and have been equally pleased.

I want to upgrade from the stock anchor this winter. Not because I have had any issues with the Bruce style anchor, just because I have read about many that have had issues with holding in different bottom conditions. I have looked at the Manson Supreme because it has a straighter shank the the Rocna. I believe that would be less modification to Cutwater anchor roller assembly. Thanks Mike for the referral to the Manson, I haven't seen any comments on TugNuts about them. My biggest concern with the Rocna is the clearance between the anchor and the winch stand when launching and loading the boat on the trailer.

I will be looking at the Rocna 10 for our R27-OB this weekend at the RT rendezvous. Brian, you bring up an excellent point regarding loading the boat. As you well know, if the ramp is steep, the anchor and winch stand can be an issues!

I replaced the stock anchor on our Cutwater 28 with a Rocna 10 after the factory anchor came loose during a storm. No comparison. That Rocna holds tighter than Dick Tracy's hatband.

Semi-related - Has anyone put a Rocna 15 on a C30 yet? Any modifications required? Thinking of going with a 15 and 75’ of chain. Too many tight anchorages with limited room for scope this summer.

We put a Rocna 15 on our (original design) R-27. The stock anchor-bracket bail wasn't quite big enough, so I replaced it with a larger "boom bail" from Westmarine. Now everything fits just fine, and we have an anchor I feel more comfortable with -- the original "claw" anchor just looked too small.

Thanks for all your responses. I too am willing to bet that the anchor roller on the new R-27 will accept a spade or plow anchor with little or no adjustment. Hope so anyway. As an aside, it is interesting the number of 25's and 27's carrying Rocna 15 anchors. Those would probably qualify as storm anchors on those boats. Some might think that overkill, but I agree that having the biggest anchor you are comfortable handling is always the way to go. Few things are more nerve-wracking than riding out a 40-50 kt squall at anchor in the middle of the night. That's when you're really thankful you went with that big anchor. or else really sorry you didn't.

Having an appropriate sized anchor or larger is always a good choice. Also, having more chain adds plenty to your set. It's all a matter of how much weight you want in the bow.

I put a Rocna 15 on my Classic R27 and didn't have to change a thing (except tweak the bail). I did not have to change the roller bracket bolt hole, as it was already on the rear hole (fully extended forward) from the factory. The bail is very tight, but it works properly. It holds better than any anchor I've ever had. It's held through two (inland lake) storms - as verified by the drag anchor alarm, overnight both times. But I still didn't sleep well.

I thought I was going to have to cut it loose once when I snagged it under a stump (man made lake, trees cut down, leaving the stumps, before filling). The roots wrapped around the chain and the stump would not drop off. I finally broke the entire stump loose. It was so big the winch would only lift it to the water's surface, not above. It wasn't fun trying to free it, but I still own it. 😀

If you plan on sleeping at anchor as opposed to stopping for lunch, then much good advice is above. The Rocna anchor is a great anchor, but go one that is over sized, I have the 13 pound Rocna 6 on my 21 ec. Also double the amount of chain normally recomended. I have 30 feet and typically anchor in less than 12 feet of water. Worry more about getting a big anchor and less about how it will look on the bow. If need be you can always change out the bow roller. I changed mine to fit the bigger anchor. I cruised with a ranger 25 for a week this summer and he had the factory claw anchor. He drug twice on the anchor that is smaller than mine. To me it looked suitable for a key chain ornament!
Go big, lots of chain, sleep tight.
