If I change to a Rocna anchor for my Ranger Tug 31S and I want to do extended cruising, sometimes anticipating strong wind in open anchorages, should I opt for a 22lb or a 33lb?

We have a 2015 R27. We changed out the undersized Lewmar 16 with a Rocna 15. Which is 33 pounds. I would opt for at least the next size up, a Rocna 20, if I had an R31. You might even want to go one size larger. Your windless should be able to handle the extra weight but check to be sure. You'll sleep better at night at anchor!

We opted for the Rocna 15 (33 lb) on our R-31CB, and are delighted with it. It is larger than the standard recommended for the boat, but the windlass does fine in hauling it up. Fits in the original bow roller with no modification. If you want even more security you might consider a longer chain. We installed 100’ of chain plus the 200’ of rope rode. We felt very secure with this package anchoring all the way up to Skagway Alaska. I give the windlass a rest periodically when weighing anchor, both to let it cool (not sure what the duty cycle is) and to give me opportunity to rearrange the chain in the locker so that it doesn’t jam.

Thanks to both responders for your replies. I will follow advice and go for the 33lb. Does anyone recommend a swivel attachment?

For that size anchor, the Mantus S2 would be a good swivel assuming your chain is 5/16 inch. Saving up for the Mantus S1 myself.

I also highly recommend the Mantus swivel. Though I believe the S1 is the one you want. You probably have 5/16” Grade 40 (G4 High Test) galvanized chain. (It will be stamped on the links: G4, or G40 or something with a “4”.) Swivels got a bad rap because if the chain, shackle and swivel got fouled, the standard type swivel had a vulnerability for breaking with side loading. The Mantus swivel fixes that. Having a swivel helps keep the chain going straight through the gypsy and not skipping or twisting (though I have heard some people say they have been perfectly happy without one). We have been very pleased with ours.
