Question: Does the Volvo D3-200 engine have any anodes in the cooling system? If so, where are they located?

I have looked at the owners manual and searched on Tugnuts, but I haven't found any answer.

The D3-150 does not have any anodes. I think the D3-200 is the same engine with some mods, so it may not have any either.

No engine anodes on the D3-200.

I was surprised to find out my D4-260 doesn't have any engine anodes either...

Greetings Larry,

The owner's manual which Ranger/Cutwater links to does indeed show two zinc anodes on the D4 (not on page 80, but rather page 101). Using this guide, I searched the engine for the anodes - couldn't find any. I then contacted the factory who told me some models do not have anodes...

If I use the link you provided and input my serial number, Volvo Penta brings up a manual for the D4/D6 which does not include or describe any engine anodes.

I wonder why VP would think a marine engine shouldn't require sacrificial anodes?

My understanding of why some engines don’t need anodes is because of the metals chosen for the various engine parts by the manufacture. I have not looked into this but that was what I was told by Nigel Calder at a Diesel engine course.

Interesting... I have the D4-260 as well and was about to order new anodes. Guess I need to check if I actually have them first! Just assumed I did.

I wonder if anodes are not needed because the heat exchanger system has similar metals also means that the engine is immune from stray currents? Any one know?

We have a 29S manufactured in 2015. Its D4-260 has two engine anodes. My understanding is that later D4's had just one and even later models have none. I replace both anodes annually (we're in fresh water) and the old ones are always pretty well eaten up.

According to the Volvo website I have the D4-260I-F, which appears to be the latest revision. Looks I don't have any anodes according to the manual. It only references cleaning/replacing anodes on the drive.

According to my data plate, my D4-260 I-F was manufactured March 6, 2016 and installed in my 2017 C28 in July 2016.

I too had already ordered two anodes to keep on hand as replacements - anodes anyone?
