It appears that I'm a tad low,is the ant freeze any thing specific or plain ole automotive type will do?

I don't know if you have a Yanmar or a Volvo engine? It makes a difference.

Sorry ,yanmar......so plain ole green anti freeze is ok.

I would check your engine specs. Every engine every year things change. You owners service manual should have the info. If you do not have it I am sure it is readily available on line. It is not good to mix antifreeze of different specifications and color does not always indicate type.

It is that time of year and I am going to winterize this weekend. As part of the process I thought I would change the antifreeze in my Volvo D-3 now that I have two seasons on the engine. I have the specified Volvo pre-mix antifreeze. My question for all you experienced folks is what is the best way to get out the old antifreeze (I have read that if I just change half every year that is probably sufficient (we typically only put 60 to 75 hours per year on the engine).) I believe the drain is on the bottom forward side of the heat exchanger - a screw in type fitting with hose barbs on it. Am I right that if I just unscrew it some the old antifreeze will come out and I can just put a hose on and pump it into a container for disposal? New antifreeze would just get poured into the reservoir on the upper front side of the engine, correct? (If this is too basic of a question I apologize in advance. I have had lots of Mercruiser products but never had a Volvo with closed water cooling system before so this is new to me and I don't want the do things incorrectly.)

I have a Volvo D4 and it requrires Volvo Penta VCS yellow antifreeze which is different than their green. The factory fill is 40% antifreeze and 60% water which is rated at -11F ....a little questionable in some climates. You may want to buy the concentrate and go to 50/50 which achieves -34F.

S Todd,

You may want to look at your engine operators manual in the maintenance schedule. I have a 2014 D3 and it recommends changing the antifreeze every 8000 hours or 4 years which ever occurs first. Unless there has been a problem with the cooling system I would go with the manufactures recommendation. So you may want to wait 2 more seasons. I would also like to understand how to drain and refill the coolant since is also goes through the hot water heater and cabin heater.
