We have a canopy, but will take it off at the slip.

There is a hard cover for the cockpit shown in my album--- ron cowan--
added this cover to avoid putting the mast and cover up and down each time I went out for a cruise.

We opted for the factory bimini top, which attaches to the aft wheelhouse top and extends back covering about 2/3 of the cockpit. Works great and is very solid while underway.

If you keep the boat at a mooring or a even a slip, the cover and a second bilge pump is very prudent
The problem with a low free board design; no room for scuppers- requiring to pump out all water that enters the cockpit.
I ordered a mooring cover for my R21, lying in Boston Harbor, from Andrew C last year, covers entire cockpit protects against sun and birds. He has the photos
Provides protection from rain water, but the carpet still gets wet; the pilot house gutters drain aft directly into the cockpit.
If the gutters drained overboard, you should be nice and dry and rest the bilge pumps.

Deemarch - Maybe I was not reading your original post correctly. Are you asking about a cockpit sun shade (cover), or a cockpit protective cover for storage. While we do use the bimini top for sun shade, we also have a custom canvas cockpit cover for when we are noy on the boat. I'll try to put a photo here for you.

Thought we'd post some photos of the solution we finally came up with. My talented wife Denise (deemarch) took some Sunbrella fabric (from Sailrite) and sewed together a simple rain cover. (she did a great job. I'm probably not paying her enough...) We added some grommets around the edge. Something simple merely to reduce the majority of rain water that the bilge pump (and house battery) would otherwise have to handle. It was really not intended to be watertight. Rain water seems to run off nicely with minimal residual water finding its way down to the bilge. We opted not to implement any canvas snaps around the hull as I felt it sufficed to just tie the canvas edges to the canopy stantions and cleats. (plus I couldn't bring myself to drill any more holes into the hull) We did however also make a second "fly" that we ran across the top of the pilot house doorway using the existing canvas track that was there. This adds a little extra protection to keep out additional rain from blowing in by the doorway. It was a much cheaper alternative than getting a $1200 custom cover fabricated.

For sanity purposes we also attach a Sunsei 170 solar trickle charger on the house battery to keep it topped off on the sunny days during the week when we're not using the boat. Seems to work fine. One other related item worth mentioning, the 15A fuse for the bilge pump that we replaced earlier in the season has not blown at all as did the 3A fuse that was originally installed from the factory.

We can provide any additional info if anyone else decides to make a cover their own. It ain't fancy... but it seems to work.
