We purchased our used R-23 without the standard heater installed. Wondering if anyone has experience with replacing the stock electric/alcohol stove top with the Wallas 800T (Kerosene) stove heater combo??

That is an interesting upgrade option for the R-23 that does not have the optional diesel heater Webasto.

My concern would be installing the correct insulated exhaust line to the thru-hull port and where to install the fuel tank for the Wallas 800T. The exhaust will be very hot and insulating the exhaust line is a MUST for safety.

This unit may be good for raising the cabin temperature but IMO will be marginal for the V-berth area.

We had the Wallas 2-burner stove in our 2010 R-25 (Classic) with its diesel fuel tank located in forward section of the cockpit's starboard locker. We used the heater feature off and on in our PNW area for some 6 years and liked its function. However, it did take a while for the V-berth to warm up to be comfortable. The Wallas stove gave us flawless operation during the time we owned the R-25. The plates got very hot and cooking things was easy. You do need to be alert when the stove is turned off as the heating plates stay hot for quite some time.

The Wallas is built/designed in Finland, and they know all about 'cold'

I had a wallas on my C-dory and it worked great, but if I had a choice and the room I would leave the existing burners and install a separate heater that you can duct and send heat to the v-berth.

I'm in the middle of installing a planer diesel heater on our R23. Going smoothly so far. I'll post some pic's in a few weeks. Contact me if you have any questions

Thank you for all of your replies. I'd love to see pictures of the install when you have a chance.

I've been both routes, Wallas all-in-one and cooktop/forced air separate.

Wallas
Pro: all-in-one compact design, simple install
Con: breakdowns lose both functions, cold feet/vee berth, stove is slow to heat up if heater isn't already running, expensive parts/repairs

direct fired cooktop/forced air heater combo
Pro: reliability, instant heat for cooking, quicker warmup heater, warmer feet/vee berth, simpler/cheaper repairs
Con: more difficult install, takes more space, overall coplexity, second fuel type (typically)needed for cook top

Most people either love or hate their Wallas. Most in the hate category are people who have had to work on them.

My Wallus has been working like a champ for 10+ years now in my 2007 R25. I only had to tear it down once for cleaning. It's super efficient and uses very little fuel. It does take some time, but it does heat the entire interior of our boat and keeps it ther. Cooking on it is easy. I actually found it pretty easy to tear down and put back together. I've put together some information for future tear downs. I calculated once that one tank would heat the boat for more than a week as long as you had a solid 12v source of power.
