This is a shot in the dark, but I know there are lots of Tugnut pilots out there and maybe one can offer some ideas.

A friend recently retired from flying big jets after 30 years. Before that he flew in the military. In retirement, has jumped into the general aviation world and is having a ball, but he has very little GA airplane experience. He bought a Commander 112A modified with a Lycoming IO-390 engine that is equipped with a Slick Start ignition booster system.

Here’s the issue: A five amp fuse in the Slick Start system kept blowing. His maintenance shop consulted with Champion Aerospace (current owner of Slick) and after running the recommended diagnostics, the shop determined the Slick Start system was bad. A new Slick Start system was installed.

Now he’s on his first trip with the new Slick Start and the fuse is blowing again.

I’m trying to help him from 700 miles away via phone and text. I have lots of GA experience, but none with Slick Start. I think it’s possible that the new Slick Start system is bad right out of the box. Something is causing the Slick Start system to draw sufficient current to blow that fuse. The maintenance shop via telephone told my friend they feel it’s something external to the Slick Start.

So, Tugnutters, any ideas what could be blowing that fuse?
