Hi there,
I am imminently buying a 2010 Ranger Tug R25 SC. It was repowered recently with the Yanmar 110.
About the only problematic issue before post-survey acceptance is a malfunctioning auto pilot. At some point the head unit was removed and is no longer in the boat. The autopilot engages from the remote to hold a heading, actuating the rudder as expected, then is disengages after a few minutes. The seller/broker believe it is an intermittent electrical connection fault and are willing to give me a modest credit to troubleshoot it ($600).
Do you believe, based on your experience with these things that I should proceed on this basis? I’ve got a background in electronics and physics so standard electrical troubleshooting is no biggie to me.
The boat is otherwise in decent condition , checking most other boxes for me and the price is in line with averages.
Thank you in advance for weighing in.

HI -
i recently purchased a R-25, The Garmin AutoPilot, all components added up to $3k... and it's still sitting in the boxes....
I would expect the intermittent could easily be flushed out with a digital meter. However the component is more spendy.
Personally I would look for a figure closer in line with the solution. I would price the hardware and go from there. I don't think I would blow a deal I liked over this. I have a similar background.
Good Luck

Good advice and information! I pulled the trigger and will get busy with my meter and wiring diagram as soon as I can drag this thing onto my yard. Thank you.

I have disturbed/discovered a lot of Gremlins with a good meter.and a Rubber Mallet over the years!
